setup for wood track vs aluminum

Thank you Sir, He has the kids building 3-wheelers with a bent front axle but I see no tuning board to dial in drift. I haven’t heard him refer to drift yet. Maybe he tunes them closer to the race. So you’re saying an aggressive COM is ok?

setup for wood track vs aluminum

Hello all. It’s been several years since I’ve been here. A friend recently asked me to help out at his church pinewood derby workshops. He uses a wooden track which I have not seen. When we used to race we used oil and were on aluminum tracks, We had our COM set between 5/8”-3/4” and our DFW...

    Preparing Car For District Race

The wiggle is caused either by poor rear alignment or not enough steer. If you can't tune the rear then add more steer as stated above. 1/2" to 3/4" additional over 4'. The NDW should not be touching the track. If there was a bad seam in the track right at the end it may have caused your NDW to...

    Black ice wheel bore prep

OK. Rethinking here and not knowing how good your rear alignment is, wheel to body gap in the rear and how much bend you have in your front axle I'm going to say keep your DFW weight around .70 oz with a steer of 4"-5". .65 oz on the DFW is fine and can be done. But, I would like to have a...

    Black ice wheel bore prep

If you’re in the .65 oz range it’s still safe and should be good with around 3.5” to 4” of steer over 48”.

    Black ice wheel bore prep

Sounds good. What is the weight on the DFW? Put the rear wheels on a book or something so when your dfw is on the scale the car is level.

    Son's first derby

That link was key for us to build consistent cars. It also helped us know if we were being more aggressive with weight bias from year to year. We bought 2 cheap, identical, $14.00 digital scales online and used them to get the numbers to input into the formula. Keep a record of all these...

    Black ice wheel bore prep

My guess is that there are many other factors than just the prep you’re talking about. PM me and I can send you all the specs on our final car that took 1st at Northernstar Council a few yrs back. It includes weight on each wheel, steer amount, axle placement and weight placement. We used oil...

Best Advice for new PWD Parents

The young kids just want a cool car. I let my boy pick the designs. We had an 8-wheeled tank, a round missile then he wanted fast and we moved to thin cars. I say let him pick anything he wants for his design. Listen to what people say here for speed advice and discuss with your son how you...

Tungsten cube placement behind rear wheels

In my experience the slight amount of weight shift that affords (if any) is maybe .01 oz on DFW. In fact, when I tried offsetting my six cubes I saw no difference in DFW weight when measuring the difference between offset and center weight BEHIND the axle. I center mine and once those are...
