Teflon tape works well. Once the axle is prepared and perfect, hold a ball of teflon tape on the axle, near the head, as the axle spins. 60 seconds forward and 60 seconds in reverse. A mirror shine and the wheel spins great. The ball of Teflon tape is about the size of a dime.

Just thinking. Our derby is in February, but I think and research long before hand. My thought is to polish the axle, and then spin the axle and hole a ball of tephlon tape against it. Then spin it the other direction. Hope to build a tephlon layer on the nail.
