Drill press fence setup with Silver Bullet

The three fence system has the advantage of getting the back holes exactly across from one another. If you use a drill press and a vise system then you must use some type of edge finder to get the wheels perfect. These cars steer more from the back wheels than you imagine.

Drill press fence setup with Silver Bullet

I think the original design of the silver bullit-block was to use one fence for the side (the long length) of the block and maybe a fence for the end where you're drilling. That system you flip the block end to end after drilling one side to drill the second side. That system ensures that if you...

    Silicone on Axles

I fish Ontario lakes like Lake of the Woods and Wabigoon. On the states side I fish Vermillion, Leach and Pelican. I target musky, small mouth bass, walleye and big pike.

    Silicone on Axles

I have never tried both together. I guess it's another thing to try. I guess I would go with Jig if you have it. Max-Pro is tougher to find. I got mine last year at Walmart on-line. I see where they are out of supply of Max-Pro. I get my Jig in Canada during my fishing trips.

    Silicone on Axles

I use both. I do think the Max-Pro is a hair faster. Just spray on wait 10-15 minutes. They're ten times easier than the other complex methods of axle prep.

    Locking in the alignment

Set screws aren't necessary for cub scout races. The only place I use set screws is when I replace the wood axle housing with delrin. I sometimes will use set screws then if I get too aggressive with the reamer. If your rules require you to use slots I would drill 2-3/32 above the slot. The...

Calling All Machinists - How to Hold (and turn) a Wheel In Lathe

when I first got my lathe I read how great the 4 jaw chucks were and got one. Cheap 4 jaw chucks are as worthless as the cheap 3 jaw ones. remember the 4 jaws have to come together exactly at the same time which is tough to manufacture. I got tired of cheap components and gave up on the lathe.

Calling All Machinists - How to Hold (and turn) a Wheel In Lathe

I missed the computer era and don't know how to post pictures and such. The part of the collett system that in your picture that rests inside of the lathe chuck's jaws is the shank and what is in the photo is a straight shank (no taper). You can get a collett shank with a MT taper (in place of...

Calling All Machinists - How to Hold (and turn) a Wheel In Lathe

I am not a machinist and gave up trying to cut wheels as good as John, but if you persist then have a machine shop make a wheel mandrel that fits the wheels you want to cut. The other problems I had was the lathe chuck was cheap and I could see wobble if I placed just a straight pin in the...

    Silicone on Axles

I usually apply enough spray that I have to shake off the excess. Wiping off the excess is slower.

    Silicone on Axles

Do not polish it off. That's the beauty of Jig and the Max Pro, just spray on and shake off excess and wait ten minutes.

    Axle Drilling ?

It looks like a lot for the money. I still use a cheap Chinese drill press many times. The two things about drill presses is a good chuck and getting the drill press spindle (bit) square to the platform. You can search the internet for ways to square the platform. The cheapest and easiest is...

    FNG introduction and some ?'s

I never could figure out the monokote so I just paint. Never tried the walnut shells on the axles. I use either the sand paper or the polishing compound method. Both seem to work for axle preps.

    RED ROCKET

The tests of Red Rocket and Legend were awhile back. The Legend was in the bottle. It is still a good base for RR and other waxes-sealants. The old slide board test is outdated now. I've come to realize adding oil to the board test changes everything. You can get a rough idea of how slick...
