Hi fellas,

It seems that this is even a more lipped bunch than I imagined.

Lightninboy won this last SS race and he says that no Puma Weights were used in his build.

I was dubious at first since the weights performed well in the other classes.

The only thing that makes sense to me is that he has got some serious stuff going in prep, and other aspects of the build.

I am gearing up for another order of weights so if you have ideas to share now would be a good time.

Hi LB,

If possible please post some photos of that beauty (X3).

The raised wheel was not at a 45* last I saw. Did it change before race time?

Was it a Pinecar wheel turned down to 2.0g or a BSA?

Many thanks in advance for any information you choose to share about this wonderful car.

Best regards,
Joe

It took builders more than 2 weeks to perfect the cubes in the PWD, so I have faith in the creativity and resourcefulness of you guys. Before the race I heard of one builder changing the orientation of the weight to test his own theories.

I really like hearing stuff like that.

Thanks guys,
Joe

The X3 uses a BSA wheel for the NDFW. The NDFW was angled <10 degrees. That's not any kind of statement against the pine car wheel, I just built this car before DD4H announced the product. My fenders are custom built for each wheel - so I couldn't just swap in a pinecar wheel without major fender rework.

And yes, the X3 does not use the Puma weights. And again, that's not any statement against them. The X3 is an ultralight weight body and I rely on the internal cube weights to add strength and rigidity. So it wasn't a good candidate, IMO, to try the wheel weights.

I have my theories as to what tipped things my way. I'll be keeping those to myself for a while.

hmmm

Speaking of puma weights, I'm still confused as to the rule for basx, are those weights illegal or not? Sorry to hijack this thread I'm just clueless.

I talked to John, you can use them in BASX they are legal! I have to sets of Puma weights I'm going to give them a try.

I have some questions for the field here related to the PUMA weights.

- Are there ways to reliably keep them mounted without glueing/epoxying them on (i.e. make them reasonable removable) ?

- Is the "installation spacer" John sells just for alignment (I assume so) ?

- Do you need to "cant" the PUMA weights so that they clear the wheel properly ?

I just haven't seen discussion of these items.

Thanks !!

In order asked.

I'm not entirely sure at this time. Epoxy may be the most secure method. It's a lot of weight that could fall off and ruin a wheel, car and/or track.

Yes, this installation spacer is for weight alignment during installation.

I myself would cant the body to accept the weight, but it may be just overkill.

Hi Mario,
Opa posted a way to attach the weights to the car so that they can be removed in the thread about attaching washers.
I have not tried it this way yet and for proxy racers it may be a little risky.
The jig that DD provides is only for centering the spacer around the hub, and is meant to be removed after gluing the weight in place.
GX likes to remove some material off the body where the weight attaches for canted wheels.
I like to tack the weight in place with thick CA glue, then remove the centering jig, and then go to town with medium or thick CA glue to fill in the gap between the car and canted weight.

Thanks for the additional info LB.
I can hardly wait to see the times you post next.
Expectations of Sub 2.96!

If you fellas have any photos of builds in progress using the Puma Racing Weights please post them to give other guys a better visual of things.

Thanks again,
Joe
