"SHOW" Class proposal

I would like to suggest and get everyones feedback on the possibility of introducing a new "SHOW" Class. This would actually be a supplement to the existing classes. This is how I think it would work - builders can enter their cars in any of the existing classes and their car would be judged for "SHOW" independently of their run times based on originality, style, creativity, workmanship, beauty, novelty, artistry, etc. They would have to meet all the same established class rules as any other car entered. Points would be awarded for first, second, third etc. by those running and assisting in the event. Those racers attending could also be included in the voting, except they could not vote for any of their own cars. John, of course, would have the say on how and who would judge the cars. The racers would not be required to designate their entry as a "SHOW" class entry. it would be automatic as every car would be given consideration and potentially judged.

As an incentive for those interested in expressing their talents there could be cash awards, and/or plaques or certificates of some sort. Special end of season trophies, or cash awards, could be included to encourage entries.

So, basically nothing would change for the races. If a car performed well it could also be judged as a "SHOW" contender.

I think including show awards might be an incentive for more racers to put into practice their ideas and enter more and different cars.

I think it is evident that building for "speed only" limits our designs to what configurations work best for that characteristic. It would be interesting to see what designs you guys come up with in this "SHOW" category if John agrees to include it.

This certainly applies in the Street Rods... You can see the cars that were chosen because of affection and coolness, and those that were chosen for aero.

And on that line of thinking, my expectation is that the Calliente (at least in her current form) is going to be "all show, no go." /images/boards/smilies/smile.gif I just hope that the shipping didn't scuff her up too much.

Thinking further on your proposal:

1) I have advocated that previously for the Street Rod class. The point of the class is to race cars that look real. A "show" judging makes sense here. My proposal on it had been to have the Street Rod race be a two-part points earning venture - points for "show", points for "go", the cumulative points determining the winner.

2) Would your "show" awards span all classes together (that is, the most beautiful PWD car from the BASX/SS-a/SS-p/SP/Elim/UNL classes), or "show" awards for each class?

3) Would a car be eligible to repeat a win at every race? Consecutive awards could be the "Maleficent" award, until a "Snow White" award came along.

4) What of a car that was built for show only? It'd be like at AWANA -- people entering a car that looks exactly like a hoagie (complete with sesame seeds falling off of it) or a fur-covered car shaped like a guinea pig. (Frankly, I think these things are out of place here.)

Aside from the Street Rod class (again, looks are already part of the equation, but are given a value of zero, so they do not effect the final outcome), I don't know that the "Show" class is tenable. I think a pic, a shout-out, and a "Most Beautiful" award icon in the sig might be all that is needed.

And, yes, I would definitely like hearing that someone thought my work was beautiful. It would certainly be more meaningful coming out of a race than the hurrahs received in an attention-whore post in the Pinewood Derby Pictures forum. (For the record, once I finish my current Street Rod project, I'm going to start a "Post pics of your Street Rod" topic there, because I love seeing these cars, and want to see more detail than I can get in the videos. /images/boards/smilies/smile.gif) [I'm talking to you, WK and your "Midnight" (Aston Martin DB-S, right?). And to D4D. And Kinser. And Egghead. And...]

A fur covered car would be SWEET! It might shed on the track though.

With the new weighting system there is a whole world of new possibilities.

I would like to see more cars like D4D's Double Vision.

As things stand, many builders might not send in a car like that because it happens to be .01 slower than their other car.

Inspired designs like that should be given a platform as well.

Sounds pretty cool, who do you think should decide everyone at the races or all the other racers? People would go out of their way to really make them look cool.

I love the idea. Some of the issues I see is that style and design are personal preferences. You could build the most perfect car in your eyes, and to another it looks like crap. I don't think that it is a thing to be done at the race but that can be done on-line and the RACING members of the board can vote on. To get your car in the show contest it must compete on the track, and the owner must post pictures of the car to be voted on. The car with the most votes before the next race wins. The prize could be a free race entry for the winning car or something along those lines.

Good Thinking QT

It can be one of those polls where each builder gets a vote.
