Okay, so I ordered John's DVD, oil, axle prep kit, wheel bore prep kit and Blue Thunder. I cleaned and prepped all of the wheels and axles as directed by the DVD. We have our district races tomorrow, and I am wondering what how I can tell if there are any glaring problems with my process without access to a test track. I know that a wheel with oil will not free-spin as long as one with graphite, but is there any benchmark on how long a properly prepped wheel SHOULD spin with oil? Should the wheel spin completely silently or should I just be able to hear a whisper?
The reason I am asking is that when I free-spin the wheels, some are completely silent and smooth, but only spin for 8-10 seconds. A couple of others will spin for about 15 seconds and seem to spin faster with the same amount of force, but I can hear the wheel spin (not loudly, but more than the others). If I back the axle out a bit, I can see a light layer of oil on the first axles, but on the others, I can just see microscopic droplets of oil (using a 10x loupe).
I know that using too much oil will slow you down, but since this is the first time I have used it, I don't know how to determine how much is too much... I used about 2 drops or oil per axle, although it is possible the application was heavier on the more silent axles (that don't spin as long).
