another washer question

The new rules for our Council just came out today and washers are allowed. ;
Northern Star Council rules - best scouting rules in the nation.

As an aside: LightninBoy; are the wheel weights allowed with the new rules? I thought of just using standard washers and filing the bottoms off so they were flush with the bottom of the car.

How does this material compare to delrin or teflon for slipperyness?

This is one of those thing where there really isn't a huge consensus about what is the best method. Different people have had their best performance using different materials for a friction plate. I think most of the slide glide products you may see from other vendors are made from UHMW like what you referenced. Some are just fine with monokote or monokote plus the teflon polish. Another even used just CA glue and sanded it to a high polish.

My second car, after installing, I polished the delrin washers starting with 2k grit up to 14k, novus 2, and red rocket. Turning it in the light you can see a bi difference.

Maybe I won't bother with it then. I do like the idea of tapering the wear surface on the block. I guess I could still do that and run nail polish. Last year we ran a generic polish my wife had here but this year I ordered some of the famous Sally Hansen polish. It's cool to try different things. Thanks.

The Puma weights are not allowed per the NSC rules.

Understand, however, that the concept itself is not illegal. Its that we need to be able to check for lightened wheels without tearing the car apart. And the Puma weights - as currently designed - prevent inspection of the inner wheel.

The relevant rule is:

2.9 The complete inside and outside lettering of each wheel must be visible when the wheel is attached to the body.

So if you were to take normal washers and grind them down to provide a viewing window, that would be allowed.

Hi Davet,

Thanks LB,

This is one way to modify the weights so that they are scout legal.

I put the recessed area of the weight into a vise and give it a whack with a hammer.

It makes a pretty clean break, allowing for full view of the inside lettering.

Best,
Joe

I can't seem to find anymore speed with two of my cars. I'm thinking maybe I should modify them with a Big Hammer! /images/boards/smilies/smile.gif

I think if you use the big hammer your car will be overweight by a bunch. /images/boards/smilies/cool.gif

Remember, Thin To Win!!! lol

How about the teflon slide material on the axle head. Could just cut a tiny pice off of the teflon slide glide and stick your axle through it so the wheel rides on the teflon tape instead of the axle head?

That was recently asked and talked about here:

I believe the results were not favorable.

Thanks. I read a lot of threads but not that one. A lot of other good info in that thread too!

I'll be the first to say I would like to see a few improvements to our rules (Chippewa Valley Council- Clear Water District - Eau Claire WI) including allowing washers, but I would prefer to have no washers than a prohibition against changing/reducing wheel weight.

My motivation isn't about speed or the race, it's about what my son learns in the process of making the car. My son learns the concept of heavy wheel = more energy to spin it, and the boys in NSC don't. I think that's an opportunity lost.

In the process of making rules, it appears subjective opinions of "fairness" and race results override the real objective - learning new concepts and improving their practical application. Many are incredibly egregious because they're difficult or impossible to police, and encourage the exact opposite behavior I think we all want to instill in our boys.

All rules (in my opinion) should be judged based on the building experience and educational value in the process. Rules that stray from those core tenets thereby causing a loss of learning opportunity are the true violations.

I like our NSC rules except for one thing. I think they should outlaw aftermarket wheels and axles. My boy and I use stock wheels and axles and placed 7th overall in his rank out of over 3,100 cars. I like that we can make many mods so I can show him how to use the drillpress, the files, how to align the table, how to polish axles and wheels, how to use dial indicator to find the best wheels, how to use a caliper to set the oblong stock axles correctly in the car. We've ruined some wheels, bodies and axles over the yrs, that's for sure.
The more mods that are allowed seems to allow me more opportunity to show my son the causes of friction and how to reduce it.

That I agree with !
