BASX Car for this weekend

My first two builds are going into the BASX AM class this weekend. I hoped I would be happy with them but I'm not. I was rushed for time, but I needed to get a baseline of where I am with my current knowledge and ability. I documented as much as possible so I think I have a decent baseline in terms of my process.

Are any of you guys ever completely happy with their build?

If you rushed it's not going to be a good baseline. That's the whole reason I didn't send in a BASX this month. I broke a wheel. Sure I had others to replace it, but it wasn't as good of a prep as the one I broke. Take your time. Remember your not racing the other guy sending in cars, you're racing yourself. That's how you get faster.

I know I didn't want to be rushed with my cars, and with helping the cubs getting ready for district, that is what I felt... I will be all in for the MA and Fire series though ! ! !

Other than my first build I think there has always been an oh crap moment. Probably was on my first one also, I just did not know enough to realize it. The important thing is to just get in there and race.

I am just recycling old parts and messing around now. One car this month is Frankencar

. It is pieces and parts from 4 different cars. I took my first league car and hacked around on it. I grabbed some axles that were in my sons car he used to race on the practice track they put up at the derby. Looked at them and they were scratched and beat up. Plan B get some different axles from some other cars. The Bent axle is still questionable but it is what I used. So yes the Stainless steel 92's are not really that hard to damage on a beat up wooden track running outside on the sidewalk with no stop section. It has cheetah wheels from a car that was always slow, from day one. It is a long wheel base. I added some fenders from another car that are now are just bare wood. So it will run in Street Stock because of the cheetahs but it is not like the other cars. I am pretty sure it will be the only SS long wheel base and only SS with just 2 fenders. But you never know.

It will be an oddball though and definitely out of its league but it is what I came up with the parts I had. I ran a car last month that was built for rules not allowing canted axels and requiring BSA axles. It was almost dead last in BASX but other than a really bad first run it was not totally embarrassing. But it was fun to just see how it stacked up against the competition.

I have put myself on a budget and it will hopefully with some work allow me to run decent but I don't think it will allow me to compete at anywhere near the top level. But over time if I can develop the skills I may try and step it up. But for now I will probably run just 2 cars a month. A street pro and eventually settle on either a BASX or SS. Still have not decided yet which one. I have one new set of cheetahs and a BASX pro set on order. I will run them and depending on results pick a class to focus on.

Keep building and keep racing. Don't sit out because a car is not perfect. Don't get frustrated and just have fun. It is really tough competition so aim for the top but realize it is far from easy. I know even if I finish last there is nowhere to go but up.

I think you are going to find that you will struggle with your first few builds (maybe more). As you build more, you will become more efficient, and better understand the time necessary to get a car prep'ed and ready to race, but to avoid being rushed, I do a little 4 to 5 nights out of the week. As far as a baseline, I still struggle at times to show some consistency in my builds, but I am getting better. Its going to take time.

I'm never completely satisfied and always have something new I want to do.

I built my first Street Pro for his months race. Now that the car is complete, I know there are things that I could have done better. I'm still sending the car in to see how I stack up against the Big Dogs. From there I can improve on my build process and hopefully narrow the gap.

There always seems to be something in a build that could have been better. Just keep notes on what you did and reminders of what you will do different on the next build. It's a learning process. Even if QT told you every step of his build process, you would still need to learn how to implement the techniques.

Sent my usual BASX as well as my son's car. I'm not completely happy with the outer hub on my car. I think at least 1 back wheel I damaged removing the wheel after the last race.

Id be happy if I had your builds too. But again Chris, how many years did it take for you to get it right and be happy?

Never satisfied, probably wont be until I get a sub 2.2 badge /images/boards/smilies/smile.gif That's why I race, just trying to gain a little more speed each month. I still have a long way to go but this forum and these guys make it fun trip.

Hey, IMHO Kinser's car bodies are no better than several of the top racers. Somehow, he has discovered a wheel and axle prep (possibly a wax that no one else knows about). I am convinced that if I took the wheels and axles off from his cars and put them on my own bodies, the car's time would be equally as fast. However, I do know he does one other thing better than the most of us: he is absolutely fanatically meticulous in his wheel/axle prep. I would bet that if a wheel even fell on the floor during assembly, he would probably junk it.

No matter what QT and DD4H may claim, I suspect the same of them

It took two years for it to click and it was only about the same time I started racing every class. Opa is mostly correct, I have gone through wheels like candy. Last month every car had a different prep. I never stop trying new things.

Well that could be bad news for the rest of us! All your preps seemed to work.
