Hello im looking for input tried looking up if a car can run under 3 seconds on graphite with all tips and secrets on this site for a scout car presuming running all DD4H parts i see that it can happen with oil we had a very successful year last year won pack won districts and finished third at council and teached my boy as he did a majority of the work as we build a car this year within the rules of being legal not cheating is it possible to run under 3 seconds any input or suggestion would be helpful thanks guys you really do a wonderful job on here of giving good sound advice.

with out of the box parts..i dont think so, but all 42 foot tracks are different..so might be possible..with lathed wheel and better axles i think you can

Every track is different, but here is my experience....

I have set-up our 6 lane 42 ft. best track probably 15 times in the last 5 years and 3 times already this year (and still have 2 more races to go). The track always runs about the same give or take maybe 5-10 thou. For our pack in particular I hand out "Silver Bullet" drilled blocks, stock BSA axles, stock BSA wheels & all the prep products for the axles & wheel bores. Everybody, but us, runs graphite even though oil is allowed. The top racers, but us, struggle to break 3.000, the winners will be in the 2.990-3.000 area and there is a big bunch around 3.000-3.050. I race another pack after our pack on the exact same track... they don't have the luxury of my kits (they use box kits and nothing else) and their winners are lucky to break 3.100.... most are around 3.100-3.500.

So to answer your question with regards to our track...

Good drilled body, BSA axles scout polished, BSA wheels not lathed = only best racers break 3.000

on the same track my kids run 2.930-2.950 on graphite & 2.900-2.920 on oil.....

I have prepared graphite cars for my grandkids using graphite. We have hit under 3.0 many times.

However, the cars were super prepared:
DD4H X-style bodies
Coated with EconoKote top and botom
COG 3/4" to 1/2"
2.O Gram DD4H wheels
Ungrooved axles, but polished to the Nth degree.
Tungsten weight with 18 cubes, 12 rear, 6 front, but arranged heavy to dominant side.
A thin Piece of lead glued to the bottom rear, but placed after several test runs on a track.

My memory is bit foggy, but it seems like we hit 2.999 once with one of DD4H's predrilled (I.e. 4 on the floor) X-Bodies, running on a NPWDRL event 1 or 2 years ago. Somewhere on this forum, I even wrote a blog: How to break 3.0 for less than 150 dollars (or a post with a name something like that).

Those times are very impressive, but keep in mind that you can run ultra-lightweight wheels under Mid-America rules.

My son's scout car ran consistently 2.993 to 2.995 last year on a 42 foot Best Track with 2.4gram wheels and stock axles. We bent the front axle with a chisel and we were not running oil. It was a stock BSA block with stock axle placement, 4 3/8" wheelbase, and the rear axles were 15/16" from the rear. We also utilized the axle slots in the bottom of the BSA stock wood block.

I could only imagine how much faster it could have been with less restrictive rules.

Bottom line, yes it is possible to run under 3 seconds with a scout car.

Good luck and I hope you and your son have fun PWD racing this year.
