canting wheels

OK I'm a newbie coming off our first derby with disappointing results especially so after the time and thought invested; anyway we're over that and moving forward and I've become obsessed now so expect many question sin the future.

My question is about canting wheels; I can't seem to get my head around what this looks like. I understand camber and toeing but don't understand how you can cast a wheel on an axle that can't be moved in front of or behind the wheel.

Would love any feedback you guys can give me.

Thanks

One way to cant is to bend the axle so that the wheel on the track is out, away from the body, and the top of the wheel cants in towards the body. However nail bending is very inexact, and I definitely don't recommend you use that method.

Cheapest way is to have John (DD4H) drill the rear holes for you. His holes are 2.5 degrees and perfectly drilled, which is what the bent axles should be, if you were good enough to bend them that exact.

Look at pictures on u-tube, you should be able to find some that show the rear canted wheels

Got it. That is something else I didn't quite understand since if the axle is straight and round and the hole is straight I couldn't see what difference turning it would make. So that would be why some folks cut a notch in the head?

You need the DFW axle hole straight so you can rotate the axle i.e steer (tune) car into the rail

I have no idea what you're trying to ask here. Please explain?

/images/boards/smilies/smile.gif Sorry about that I was typing too fast and wrote cast a wheel instead of cant. Thanks for trying to help, I just re-read it.

DD4H I believe has a pre drilled block that has the FDW pre drilled to the correct cant and steer.

Thanks geezer, that's what I needed., so does anyone drill the axle hole in the FDW in apositive cant to prevent having to bend the axle?

We are building a car with this block now. My son is racing it at the Cabin Fever Clasic. Here's hoping it rocks!

Best of luck, I'd love to hear how he does.
