Car weights

I wasn't sure. I had recently watched a video about a grandfather and grandson that have won back to back first place trophies at the NYC world championships. Their 2017 car had puma weights. He said it runs mid 2.90's. We are headed there this year. Just curious what my sons competition will be like.

Hello Reggie,

You are correct. The fella that did so well at the World Championship race was using the Puma Weights and he put up blistering times on the track.
Posts made by TRE should be taken with a grain of salt.
I plan on using the A PUMA RACING, Cub Weights at the National Championships in Omaha which will be taking place at the end of this month.
Unfortunately, it looks as if sideweights will not be allowed at the World Championship in NYC this year.

Ahhhh Troy,
When an event like the National Championships comes along... with some of the fastest cars and most skilled builders in the nation making an appearance...I think that you will find quite a few cars to be sporting side weights.

No big deal. Everyone has their own opinions. I don't plan on using the puma weights anyway. We have had fast times without using them. We are going run the car he took second overall at districts. Even though that track was not very well maintained and was 49'. His car ran 2.94 on our 42' sanded and polished test track. I hope the Championship track is better maintained. He should be competitive.

I think the puma weight car ended 3th overall last year, but times were in the 2.98-2.99. I thnk the winner ran around 2.96. You can find the times from past year at the NYC world champion ship website. I was actually surprised that he was allowed to run the puma weights since no air shields or other wheel closures were allowed.

Is than running graphite or oil? If those times are using graphite with non lightened wheels you should be in pretty good shape. But don't get to hung up with the times you run on a certain track. How the track is setup is crucial. On our pack track which is apparently 42 feet we have a hard time breaking the 3.1 yet on another best track 42 feet long we ran around 3.00. I still suspect the pack track being 49 feet but the section count match 42 feet. I have my worries about the NYC track, last year they did not put the track together well and a lot of cars were flying out of their lanes near the stop section. Hopefully they will do a better job this year.

Hi Reggie,

Have no fear about the National Championship Track. One would be hard pressed to find a more precise, finely tuned track.
On the other side of the immense hall from the league race is the scout equivalent of the Nationals,
The MidAmerica Pinewood Derby. It is quite an extravaganza.

Hi TRE,

You sound like a very skilled builder.

Would you mind if I ask...

I am planning on running this car at the National Championships using sideweights.

Do you think she has a chance of making the finals?

Thanks in advance,
Joe

Another quick question Troy...

Do you consider yourself to be a pro?

Because I thought that you drive a cement mixer for a living.

That is the way the district track was for us this year. Every year at the end of the scout races they replace one section with a loop for outlaw class. At that junction was where cars had trouble. I don't think they sanded and polished it either the aluminum is dull.

Hi Reggie,
Yep...
I believe It was Bulldog that created a demo video on how to properly polish a PWD track.
Starting with the precision engineering of the BestTrack and lovingly hand finishing each joint and bringing the entire thing to a mirror finish. It really is quite a sight to see something so big to have such attention to detail.
