My son has it in his head that if we win district we should send our car to Nationals. You guys promise not to laugh if we send it in?

Of course I have to figure out which class our car qualifies for. I may need your help on that. Is there an award for last place?

Yeah nationals this year has teamed up with the Mid America derby. It is pretty much the closest thing to a national cubscout pinewood derby. You don't need to be a district winner. He will also get some cool swag to show off no matter how he does.

I know I am putting the cart before the horse... I haven't even talked with the cubs that I am helping.

If these boys want to run their cars in nationals, are they running graphite or oil?

I may be bringing this idea to them, letting them know that there might be something after Districts.

Look here for the official rules for each division for the MA side of the nationals if you want your scouts racing with other scouts. http://www.mid-americaderby.com/rules

There is open scout graphite and open scout oil. The MA rules are actually less restrictive for wheel weight then the NPWDRL rules for street stock and BASX. Not all the scout cars entered are running with ultra-light wheels but those that are gunning for 1st place will be. I think JBD's said his scout's car was running heavier wheels and still placed in top 3(?) I believe. For my son's car I am still debating whether or not to just send it will the BASX wheels we're currently using or buy another set just for MA.

So depending on how your scout's cars are set up they may actually line up with the rules for one of the pro side of Nationals but everyone there will be running oil.

Great ! Thanks !

They have a graphite only class for the cubs... I will talk to the fathers of the cubs and see if they may be interested in running their son's cars in this, and from there, we will determine whether or not they want to run oil or graphite....

I hope they will be interested. This will be way cool for them.

I would never laugh at a cub car, yours maybe but not a cub car. /images/boards/smilies/biggrin.gif When I was a kid my only car looked like a little bus and never made it to the end of the track. No double elimination, it was one and done and I didn't get the chance for another 34 years.

I dont know anyone on here that would laugh at a scouts car. Let alone anyone that sends a car in NPWDRL or MA car. If you have the skills or desire to send in a car to either of those, youre man enough to race and THAT deserves respect, no matter what your car looks or races like.

Daaaaaaang!

Saddest story I've ever read here.
wah

(Completely serious. That is an awful story!)

RACE THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THEY WILL LOVE WATCHING THERE CAR ON TV (assuming you wont be live)

That's how this hobby will grow, i know when i sent my first league entry in it was nowhere near what most everyone was doing. IT WAS A BLAST and now I'm hooked. There are many pictures on the Mid America web page that shows the cars, many are just the average "scout cars" that you would expect to see at your local pack level... and there are ones that will be "higher grade" builds. My son raced his car last year in the scout open graphite and finished mid pack, didn't have lightened wheels (stock lightly turned on derby-worx tools 2.6g) and had a BLAST

I can make um look pretty, but still trying to make them go fast... is my challenge.. Send them in and have fun with it.. The good thing here is these guys will help guide us through those growing pains.... One day your car is up and running... And you will be helping a new racer..

I'm bringing 4 other scouts cars to race at MA (and they really built them). They want to see thier cars run on TV...

Last year we had a party and broadcast the races on the TV and Projector screen. Everyone had a blast . This year, if we don't go live, the party is already growing. All their relatives and friends are coming this year.
Send a cub car in and watch their interest go through the roof. The 3 cubs that I help build a car, were ready to build a new car in June last year. Now we have 4 more "open kids" to send in this year. All year long it's "when can we start building for Nationals". As my wife says, "I have created a monster" /images/boards/smilies/smile.gif

Great posts! I will tell my son and let him send it in if he wants. Our rules state graphite only and to use the block, wheels and axles from the kit or anything bought has to have a BSA logo on them. We also can't sand or lathe our wheels. I'm sure we won't place but he will be pumped to watch. He honestly did most of the work on this car. Although it does have some problems so we may make another one this week for district. Either way Hopefully you will see our car at Nationals.

Well guys we sent the car in and had a great time watching the live thread. It was a cool experience. Thanks to everyone that helps with that event. We didn't place as we expected but made the first page of results so we consider that as a win. The car had two scratched wheel bores and the drill job isn't the greatest. We are going to try to improve on that next time around. Thanks also to everyone on the forum who gave us advice. We got a second place pack trophy and won at districts. Great PWD season for us!

That's all you can do is try to learn one new thing and master it then move on to the next issue, you won't believe how fast you become quickly.
