What's the general consensus on the dominant front axle...grooved or not?

Grooved for me.

What lube are you running and what are you attemping to do? I've tried ungrooved axles and went right back to grooved. If you're running graphite you'll definitely want to use grooved. Your times won't drop off as fast.

Grooved for me, i tried ungrooved on my mod one time, was way slow.

Check the rules if it is a BSA race.
Many councils forbid grooved nails.

I have found that I enjoy getting my groove on. Make sure you are cutting against the spin.....
