"Do's and Do Nots" of Graphite

How do the pros apply graphite? I do not seem to understand how to use it, because my car seems to go the fastest the first run or two and markedly decrease in speed run 3 or so and on. Please help! How should I apply it and what should I avoid. How can I run 12 heats with no prep between and not lose more speed than everyone else. My car going slower and slower seems to be chronic, happening in multiple years and with completely different builds. I need to go back to the drawing board with graphite. Or is there something else that can make your car get progressively slower?
 
LMAO! Believe me I wish I could, but oil is not aloud. It's for scout races my son and I build cars for, so unfortunately we are forced to use the stuff.
 
Sounds as if the wheels are getting dirty/damage, or possibly your alignment is being compromised? You're not re-applying graphite between each run, correct?

Last year was our first vast improvement(always fast, but not consistent). My gains came from good prep to the axles and wheel bores, as well as making sure that you're cleaning your axles/bores after the prep to remove residue. John's graphite did the trick, but a lot of time was spent burnishing the graphite into all the mating surfaces of the body/axle and wheels.

Thank you for the replies everyone. I did not know prep was required with graphite. I was just trying to get it in after the wheel was on. Boy, I feel stupid lol.
 
We certainly aren't the fastest racers around, but we're the fastest here in our District, and this is what won my son's Pack and District and then the "World Championship":

Bore prep with DD4H bore polish.
Treat with Red Rocket
Polish axles to 5000 grit, then Mother's Chrome wheel polish with a leather strap.
Pledge, shake it off, let it sit a bit, then gently wipe with jeweler's cloth.

Burnish bores with DD4H graphite-impregnated Q-tip stem.

Cars never slowed down, ran up to 9 runs at District.
