Drill Press

Puma, Delta went the way of the Taiwanese a few years back
eeek
Heck, even the ol Wilton was made in Taiwan, had no clue when I bought it.

Just because something is made in Asia doesn't mean it's poor quality necessarily. I have a Jet horizontal bandsaw and it is awesome! But I also have an off brand 6x36 belt sander that has really crappy tables. Caveat Emptor!

Been using this press the last couple years around the house til the cord got robbed- they stole the cord and left everything else! Planning to upgrade now that I got a good excuse! Now to talk the ol lady into it.

Yeah Tre, that's the one. I also bought the extended table for it made out of MDF. It's fairly well made for the price but it adds a lot of weight. My garage is so full that I have been known to carry up a saw or drill press to the kitchen table. I have a loving and understanding wife!

She might be reading over my shoulder!

I will say that the first HF drill press I bought was missing the table and I had to take it back. I bought it right after Mid-America for Father's day and never opened the box for 4 months. Opened the box and no table, I tried taking it back and it had been more than 3 months and couldn't find the receipt. They wouldn't take it back. I bought another, took out the table and then took it back, telling them it was missing the table so not to sell it. Big hassle but I have had no problems with it. I have only drilled 6 cars with it.

Couldn't have been. I don't see an inch of duct tape.

LOL- minus the duck tape it has Red Green written all over it.
lol
I used black electrical tape to secure the drill.

Rather than replace the cord that was stolen I'm researching some cheap but good presses, I just don't think I will get the accuracy out of this one.

I had issues with that MicroLux that are written up somewhere on this site. It has some feature advantages over the Proxxon (larger table, more drilling depth, etc.), but it doesn't have the collet setup. The trouble was that the alignment wasn't perfect. Mine mostly had a very slight slope front to back. This is a problem for razer wheels cars with flat axles. The alignment met their specs however and they didn't desire to do anything about it. I disconnected the base with thoughts of having it milled plumb, but that was a risky operation. You are dependent on the locking of the column to the base. Once I took that apart, it was a huge job getting it back close to where it even started. I tried some slight shimming and that wasn't going anywhere. I am guessing that they have quite the setup to do it properly at the factory.

To me, the moral of the story is that most DPs still need some tweek in their setup or use in order to gain perfectly aligned PDW axles. You can drill without the greatest DP if you have a very flat table, good drill retention, low runout and you are willing to experiment enough to figure how what it takes for you to use that machine to get the results you want. My fastest and most winning bearing car was drilled on the cheap HF that they sold until the more recent one. I guess a second lesson is be careful of features that hide the fact they have cheapened up on the basic stuff you don't see until you take it apart.

Sorry to thread jack, but are thesse small preceission presses generaly the best for drilling axle holes? I am considering buying a DP for pwd building next year, But I would be interested in a larger table top unit that would have the ability to tackle larger work as well.

Go with the smaller drill press.

It is the right tool for the job.

Not sure whatcha got goin on but...

If you really need a bigger press later on, then get it then.

It is less frequent than you would imagine.

Not sure what brand to get myself. Everyone uses Proxxon but I heard from 1 person that gave them a kinda bad write up.

The micro lux is looking less good by the minute.

The $220 proxxon thats on Amazon? I'll have to think about that. I wouldnt mind buying a drill press for $220, but im not so sure that im willing to buy one with such limited uses as a small proxxon. But if they are proven to last a long time maybe it wouldnt be such a bad idea. I'd like to be able to get decent at this and maybe once we age out of scouts set up a little derby 101 workshop to teach other how to be a little more competative. I'm sure it would come in handly there.

Are the proxxon powerful enough to drill metal for other aplications I may want to use it for? Its definatly the right size for an apartment though. LOL.

In my opinion, No the Proxxon is really only for hobby work. It won't go through a 2x4 or even plywood. It couldn't even hold a large drill bit. That's not what it was made for. It's a hobby drill, jewelers drill, and circuit board drilling for precise holes.
