Which should I do first with starting to build a car? Making the weight pockets first or drilling the holes for the axles?

I always cut weight pockets first.

i do the opisite, axles first , weight pockets second. i think it does not matter, i just like a non-molested surface when i put the block in the block. if i do the weight pockets first i may leave a wood burr or a sliver. then it could mess up my angles while drilling.

Do the axles first on an otherwise untouched block.
Install the wheels, roll it very slowly down a test board, both forward and backwards.

Watch the rear wheels, and make sure they migrate away from the body towards the nail head.

If they don't, throw the block away and start over.

Don't waste time cutting the weight pockets until you know you have a good block, i.e. proper drilled axles holes.

I cut the weight pockets epoxy in the weights. Then true sides of the wood block before drilling axle holes this gives you the most accuracy. It does waste time if you do it wrong and need to start over but I feel the results are worth it.
