First timer in Street Stock!

Never underestimate the amount of speed you can get out of this style of car. With a set of Cheetahs you can run in the 2.97x's with with a solid alignment.

Nice looking car. Being that it is non-pinewood, what did you make it out of?

I just fendered (if that is a word) Time Warp, which had the same body style you have here and was a solid 2.98xx every run with the original Cheetahs. I'm hoping to crank out some new speed with fenders and going with some v2 cheetahs for now. We'll see what happens at Nationals.

I used balsa laminated between two pieces of 1/64" birch ply. I wasn't sure if balsa would be durable enough to hold the axles so I inserted pine just where the axles go.

I tried tinkering with a set of fenders but when I ran it, it was no faster so I left them off for now. Gotta do more work on that. I think less side area is good for me now since I'll be way back in the "dirty" air!!

My scale calibration weights showed up so I recal'd my scale at 145g and reweighed the car. It's at 142.15g now. I'm debating whether I should add another .5g or not.

I did order some Jig off the links that camcar and jator posted. If it shows in time I'll reprep and see if it helps me. (fingers crossed!)

I lightly sanded the edge of the DFW with the 12k grit paper to smooth the bumps in the tread. Even my wife commented on how quiet this car is. I also locked down the NDFW, so it doesn't rattle.

You turned that block of wood into a nice car bro keep up the good work. If you want to see some dirty air effects watch "my favorite race" in the videos section
lol

I saw that video! I was surprised to see that much disruption, I guess it was because QT's car was light on steer to make it faster?

Looks ready to compete ... Good luck bro

Thanks! I'll need it!

OK guys, I'm getting my checklist together to see if I'm forgetting anything. Here's what I did so far:

*Paid entry fee for race and enclosed copy of the paypal receipt in shipping box
*Filled out registration info on http://pinewoodderbychampionships.com/registration-2/
*Labeled car, inside of the shipping box flap and Legend box with car name and my name and address
*Marked car body on DFW with a "D" for staging (I want the rear just centered so I left it unmarked)
*Made a shipping box for the Legend carrier and glued the foam in so there's no loose pieces to be misplaced.

I still need to make a shipping and a return label but I had a question. Does it matter if I ship the car with FedEx, UPS, or do I need to use the USPS? I get a discount with FedEx and UPS but I'll use the post office if it's going to cause someone else a headache by using them.

Anything else I can do to make it easy on the volunteers?

edit: WOOHOO! Just sold a truck grille on ebay, so I can put another order in to DD4H! Might even get a second SS car done if I have the time!

I does not matter about Fed Ex, UPS, or USPS. Just make sure the return label is there.

Also on a side note, Freaky is right for once, get those wheels as clean as possible. The area where the wheel makes any contact need to be as smooth as possible. Just spin them on some 1000-1500grit paper and they will smooth out. Dirty wheels can cost you as mush as .010.

OK, so my SS scout career is officially over! I'll be in SS am next time. Car ran 2.9990, 2.9986, and 3.0030 for an average of 3.0002! Lane 3 seemed a bit slow for me, but really pretty even otherwise. No complaints. I didn't notice any obvious wobbles on the live feed. I want to see the replay if it's posted.

So I need to re-run the car when it gets home, but for right now I'm taking the average of 3.0002 divided by the average on my home track of 2.705 and I get 1.1091312. So if I then take a target time of 2.978 divided by 1.1091312 I get a target ET on my home track of 2.684. Does that sound about right? Stephen

This was our first time, with only scout pack winner on resume. To make it to national finals and 6 th place really amazing for our AeroBlu...

rocketmann, was there a mixup on your team name? Someone on the chat feed said they ran Aeroblu under their team name if I read it right.

Bracketracer, what color you gonna make your car next race? I want to know so we don't wear the same dress to prom again! I swear you cant tell our cars apart in the video!

I know mine when I see it because I put a small blue dot with the staging letter next to the DFW!

I have no idea what color the next one will be, I let my kids pick the color when we're at the store. The youngest likes RED this week, who knows what he'll like when it's time to choose!

Green barely got me a sub-3 badge, wouldn't have even done that without the time adjustment. I need to have them pick a faster color next time! I do like the Testors lacquer, it goes on easy, dries fast, and doesn't weigh much!

I'm perched on QT's COM thread right now trying to decide what to do on the next SS AM build. I also picked up an AMT '57 T-bird to attempt a Street Rod car.

I'm almost done adding incremental timers to my track, I'm not sure if I can learn anything from breaking down the run but it can't hurt.

bracket,
the timer thing you are working on should prove to be use full i'm an old time motor cycle drag racer and the 300 foot timer was what we tuned our set up with. out side the box I think we must be to catch these guys.

I think this will be some interesting information and could give you an idea of what is happening as the car heads down the track, like where does it start to slow or does it maintain speed the entire distance. But like GO Racing said, the out of the box will give some good input. The faster you are out of the hole, I think, it will let you know if your prep process is good or not. Going back over the videos for this past event my cars where fast off the line, in comparison to the others on the lanes, at that time.

Keep us up to date on how things go with your new timer system. I may want to employ this when I get my track. More data, more data!!! Muhahahaha......

Good thing I had my disclaimer in there, "I think".
lol

So, what do you think merits a car's quick reaction to the drop of the gate pin? Staging? I'm not saying that if the car leaves the gate first it will win, just saying it left fast and is first to gain speed. Leaving quick off the pin has to be attributed to something and my thought was a good prep process. Eager to hear thoughts on this.

I don't know if this is true....

I'll second this because in reviewing the video from our first heat in the scout race class, our car got the hole shot and was in front by about a wheel width but it was run down by E3 PWD's car on the flat.

The car's com was 1/2" and steer was 2.5"'ish over 48" (at least on my dining table). My initial thought was too much steer given prep process was in line with everything published in the forums, but who knows?
