Fish eyes in silicone spray

I have a can of some silicone based spray I found that is not jig and it seemed worth moving forward based on my initial testing. The catch is under LED lighted magnification the axle that has been sprayed and then dried is dotted with "fish-eyes". If you are familiar with the freshwater disease "ich" that fish get it looks the same. I took a dedicated strip of Selvyt cloth and buffed the imperfections out til the axle was smooth.

I was also faster with one coat buffed out rather than 2 coats buffed out. I should test it leaving the fish-eyes and see what happens.

My question is, what have you guys found when testing sprays and encountering this phenomena? Best to buff em out, leave em, scrap the spray and get Jig?

I wouldn't care what it looks like. Try it both ways and see which is faster. If I accidentally dropped my axle in the dirt and it turned out to be faster, I'd be purposely dropping my axle in the dirt. /images/boards/smilies/biggrin.gif

Great points- thanks guys.

I'll test it with the fish eyes and see what's up- wouldn't surprise me if it was faster or pretty much the same. When I do, I'll report the results to this thread.

Kinser, your statement about dirt is pure gold!!
A funny story about dirt that just came to mind. A boss of mine used to buy itty bitty bags of dirt that were harvested from gold country in Alaska. The company claimed it was fresh dirt and had not been checked over for gold in any way, possibly containing gold nuggets. I couldn't help but picture someone intentionally tossing in flakes of gold just to get a rise out of someone.

Hahaha. I would like some of that dirt and try to get the "cash for gold" guys to pay up.
When I have experienced fish eyes with spray paint it usually has to do with some type of impurity left on the surface before the spray goes on.

...or any product that does not promote paint adhesion to the surface being painted will create a fish-eye condition. Maybe Chief, our resident autobody painter, can shed some light on this.

Now, as far as the Silicone spray "fish-eyeing" on a "clean" axle it may have to do with the product itself.

I haven't experience this condition using Jig, it always seems to layer real well for me.

If buffing it out makes you faster I'd do it, otherwise go back to square one.

Good call Laser on the impurities, time for this dog to look into stepping up his game in dry, contaminant free air delivery.

I feel another element may be temperature of the spray and the axles. Warming up the can to at least room temp. might help?

Anyone know if teflon sprays can do the ol "fish-eye"?

I have begun polishing my fish with a Selvyt cloth with great results.

Selvyt cloth soaked in salt and aquarium stress coat- wipe the fish down real good and you're set/images/boards/smilies/biggrin.gif
