I decided to build another car b.c Spirit got me more excited. Only problem is I don't have the foam John sells and it won't get here in time to send the cars out. Anyone know a supplemental foam or something I can use to ship a car?

go get some of that pink foam at homedepot its 5 bucks for half sheet..its a pink foam board
+1..I have used the pink/blue board. works pretty well but only once or twice, and I would not use it for an Unlimited car...just sayin.

ODD,

If there is a Sports Authority store close by, get a few pieces of the Cap Barbell floor mat (high density foam, see link below) from there, cut two layers to fit the box, stack and glue them with 3M rubber glue. Then you can cut/route out the car body shape. Make sure the wheels turn freely and do not touch the bottom of the box. Use super glue to attach the foam (top and bottom piece) to the box. To avoid damage to the fenders (if any) make sure they fit snug and there is no room for side to side movement. Cutting the car body width 1/4" short will ensure a tight fit. Good luck with the shipping.

Great idea...and the Home Depot also has those floor puzzle pieces in the kids room section in flooring.

Well I ended up using some harder Styrofoam. It was a little messier than I wanted, but holds the car in well. I was worried about the styrofoam getting into the wheels so I put the car in a bag first, then placed it on the styrofoam. Worked pretty well. Thanks for the advice guys. DONT PROCRASTINATE or get a building bug up your butt 2 days before you can ship unless you have good shipping supplies.

Learned from the BEST. But it's not totally my fault. I had my car done I said I was sending on Friday. It's Spirits fault. After working with him I got excited and started to work on another car and said "i can finish this by Sunday". But I forgot about shipping...

I have that pink foam board also - so what is the problem with using it for an Unlimited car?
I just made a nest for a razor wheel Unlimited out of it and it looks good to me.

Who needs foam?
With all the helping scouts build their cars, I used all the foam I had laying around the house on carriers to go with the cars. When it was time for my beater car, I had to scrounge up whatever I could (I even had to make my own box since I had no more even close to the right size!)

I'm going to apply for a patent!

Here is my makeshift carrier. If I was going to ship I would get a little longer box to cushion the ends. Salvaged the foam in the trash bins at work. Work at a tech company and they throw out a lot of sheets of foam. I should start stockpiling it. Other guys repurposed them too for their shop or ice house.

Looks like your picture didn't come through.

Chris, If you're shipping that you might be better off just wrapping it in bubble wrap. /images/boards/smilies/smile.gif

Kinser, I'm sure you were trying to be helpful here. It's just that I've seen some of the professionally bubble wrapped cars and the results of such a packaging. I just couldn't help myself, sorry for my crass!

Kinser,
No offense was taken. I think your response was offered in the same spirit that my post was made in. Just like txchemist you're trying to tell me nicely that i can do better. I'm looking for bubblewrap as we speak to upgrade my packing. Do you recommend big bubbles or the small ones? Should I try for the foam peanut upgrade?

I recommend a Legend carrier from DD4H! Then follow instruction on DVD or 5kids site to complete.

Regarding bubble wrap - I have used the big bubble stuff without problems on some wide wheel cars such as Rat Rod, and and the short wheel based Mini Cooper. I would not dare use it on a razor wheel car. You need to completely isolate those wheels!
