(To continue totally derailing this thread...) I'm reminded of my first trip to NC. My wife (raised outside of NOLA) and I were trying to get to a wedding in Asheville, NC and stopped for directions. The person said several words I understood, but the majority of them I did not. I was just staring at the person wide-eyed. My wife tugged at my shirt, said "thank you very much" to the person, and led me out of the shopette.
"You understood her?!", I asked incredulously.
"Yes", and then she rattled off the directions in English.
I grew up in the military with a wide-variety of kids and accents, even in a foreign country, and never really had a problem. I'm still amazed that I couldn't understand the woman at the shopette.
(and to put the thread back on track...)
Good luck to you, John, in your move to NC! /images/boards/smilies/biggrin.gif
