I would like to find a single small section of track to use as a width gauge for my modifications. I have seen pictures of the just can't seem to locate where to buy one.

your best bet for that would be to contact Best Track... they have track pieces for that very reason.
You could also use the trophy stand they have, it’s the length of the car, and I’m pretty sure it’s the normal width as a normal track.

Oh, I was mixing that up with something else, well, that will tell you if your car is way to long, Lol.
? You could just buy a whole track section and chop it up to the lengths you like and trade off the rest....?
Or use best track dimensions and have a local machine shop mill you one from a solid chunk of aluminimum or go to home depot and buy little pieces of wood and fab one yourself....
