I was planning on going to Hobby Lobby today to pick up some Hob-E-Lube graphite. I know, DD4H is the best, but can't afford right now. Hope to get some before race day though. But think I read this is the next best thing available in stores. I did a search on there store, and it looks like they don't carry it anymore. Can someone confirm this?

What they did have is Derby Car Supply graphite and on the high end, XLR8 Ultra Graphite. Has anyone had experience with this? If so, is it same stuff as Hob-E-Lube, but renamed? I'm hoping to work on some cars tonight, so hope to find something local and affordable.

Thanks in advance.

Side note, just called Hobby Lobby and they said the DO carry Hob-E-Lube in store. Can someone confirm? I know sometimes workers that don't know stuff like this can assume that graphite is graphite, and that maybe they just have the same stuff available on their online store. Hoping to save a trip out there if they don't carry it.

I think they do carry it
Thanks so much!

And to everyone, I'm sorry I keep asking SO many questions. I have to hold back from asking more. I just really want to do good at the races this year and more importantly ensure my kids have a great time and are competitive.

I appreciate everyone's help SO much.

I've used Hob-E-Lube, XLR8, and DD4H. All with good results. DD4H and Hob-E-Lube do seem better but the difference isn't huge. So don't panic if you can't find the Hob-E-Lube. I will say the one nice thing about the XLR8 is the long thin applicator tube makes it really easy to get it where you need it.

I will say with the amount of effort and research you've put into this you'll probably be good. I can tell you've been bitten HARD by the bug and you are well on your way to becoming "THAT DAD". Beware though. This is only the beginning. The pinewood derby rabbit hole goes deep.

Test tracks.... mini lathes... $200 drill jigs... Gauge pins and 1 2 3 blocks.... And on and on and on and on to the edge of insanity...

Grrrr. So I calle Honbby Lobby.

"Do you carry HOB-E-LUBE graphite?"
"Yes we do."
"Not just graphite, but HOB-E-LUBE graphite, that particular brand."
"Yes, we carry it."
"HOB-E-LUB, because online, you don't sell so I want to be sure."
"Yes, we carry it."

30 minute car ride later, Hobby Lobby doesn't carry Hob-e-lube. It was no where to be found. :(

Only "Derby Supply" graphite, not even XLR8.

Looks like I'm stuck with Revell. Does anyone know if it's decent?

On a side note, they have almost everything Derby Worx makes labeled as "Derby Supply." Must be there new brand.

Im sorry that happened to you...ive been in simular situations....so frustrating

Hobby Lobby used to sell PineCar and Revell pinewood derby products ( Hob-E-Lube is a PineCar product) but the last time I was in the local store they had cleared out a bunch of it. Had all the Revell wheels on clearance. I heard Revell was getting out of the business of derby products entirely?

I haven’t seen Revell stuff either. I use to buy it before I knew better! Hobby Lobby appears to be getting rid of everything and making there own brand. Wonder if it will be any good.
