I destroyed two cars today trying to cut them out.

I had them all marked up where I needed to drill and cut. Drilling turned out good, then I tried cutting. I cut both cars too thin and ended up just tossing them in the trash. They were nice pieces of wood too, what a waste.

I just unplugged all the power tools, cleaned up the shavings and shut off the lights. I'll try it again another day.

ahhh it will come around! I had a half of a car hit the far side of the garage before! (3 car garage too) I thought "man that was close"! lol

If you don't screw something up your not doing anything.

I had a drilled routed and shaped car last month, that I broke trying to relieve the axle holes on. I should have done it in advance of when I did.

When do you think is the best time to relieve the axle holes?

I've wrecked more cars than I've built. When I was first learning how the whole process went I think I broke 3 or 4 routing out the weight pockets. I have cut some cars too thin, but was able to make some work. What I've learned from that is, if you're using a bandsaw and want your car 1/4" thick, cut it about 5/16" thick then use a belt sander to get the desired thickness or sand by hand. It's a little mor tedious, but you have more control.

Before you insert the axles.

HAHAHAHA
Just kidding. For me it doesn't matter when its done because I ream the holes. Reaming them does not require a lot of force, so there is little stress on the body. I used to not ream, and I used to wreck a lot of bodies. That was a well spent 15 bucks.

+1

And when you get in the habit of just buying 1/4" stock, sawing out the pockets, then glueing on the top (before drilling) - you mess up a lot less cars.

What is the process to ream the holes? Pin Vise and a jobber lenght bit?

Right after they're drilled and before you do anything else to the block of wood. There's no need to get a reamer now with the new axles coming out at .090".

I was hoping to send 3 or 4 cars to Nationals. This week I have wrecked my most prized Street Stock (The Beast is dead) /images/boards/smilies/frown.gif ..., a BASX, Eliminator, and Unlimited. I'm like a Bull in a China shop these days. I feel your pain!
