So I got some interesting results from a fun car I built. I built a block car, like out of the box looking block. slightly narrowed and height reduced. The body was hallowed out and than covered with a balsa sheet. I took the wheels and axles out of one of my SS's and started testing. Wow I can not believe the difference in time. Where the SS's was running 2.955's on my track the block was running 3.050's. I knew that aero mattered but I didn't think it would matter that much!

I've built 2 block cars. One my son ran in a Cub Scout pack race, and won easy. And built one for my wife to run in her Goodyear Tire derby event recently. She had the Goodyear R&D engineers very confused with how much she beat them . I think they had to go back to the drawing board on the whole aerodynamics thing. It was slower than my league cars and fast for the bewildered engineers. I took great pleasure in making those builds. I got the wood body down to 30 grams......SPIRIT.....

Forgot to finish my thought on this subject. Point is aerodynamics is not so important in "scout" racing. Just get everything else right, and you will do well. Unless you make a sailboat !!!! However when your chasing Mr."QT" in this league you would be wise to pay good attention to "Aero"
bruce
hmmm
......Speaking of league, "John" we don't tell you enough , but "THANKS" for providing a great place for us to play in.....SPIRIT......
clap

First off, QT 2.955 HOLY
eeek
Second R&D must have a new meaning at Good Year now, after that beating. Third +1 to John.

You are talking crazy QT! I have read all over the web that aerodynamics don't matter in PWD! Crazy talk I tell you!

You been hanging out on DT site again haven't you?
lol
Didn't your mother ever tell you don't talk to strange crazy people about PWD.

I don't go to the DT site any more.... too painful.... bothers me.... the mods there know everything about everything.

I don't know how many responses I have written and then just not posted. I have seen so much talk this year of special ways to put the weight in. They post links to complicated formulas on how to calculate how much wood to remove for how much weight. It doesn't seem to matter how many pictures I post and how much I say "put the weight in the back" they feel that some calculus computation of how to do the weight is going to make them win.

DT is a great place to get started if you like PWD theories of which I do. It's just hard to sort through what works and what works best. I enjoyed my time there and will visit time to time. But at the same time I understand why others feel the way they do. Many parallels in the non-virtual world.

Stan Pope's videos on how to lathe a wheel...

Where else can you find something like that?

There are all sorts of nuggets on there as well as dead ends.

The diversity of their viewers coming from many different fields lead to some thought provoking questions, regardless of what answer is given.

LOL!!...thats good I wasn't holding anyone's negative review against them. Everyone has their own needs depending on where they are in there derby life span. I know the goals of both forums are very different. So what doesn't work for some, works "good enough" for others.
