I've done tons of wood burning projects, you rarely need do go deep.
I was actually thinking of doing a "torch/ toast" on one of my Grandson's cars, and then clear coating it.
Use a light hand, and do multiple passes if need be, to get fine lines, or shading.
If you're looking for "depth" (Where you think it's going to pass through the laminate) I doubt you'd be able to tell the difference in the burn, between the two woods, making it invisible. (Burnt Black, is pretty even across most woods, despite what kind of wood.)
