So a friend of mine has had 3 boys race in cubs for 3 years each. He had built 9 cars and he told me they looked cool but were slow as a snail. He found out I love these little cars and brought his block up to my shop and the 3 of us worked together on this kids car. We built it just like we build S.S. After the first building session my friend told me this was the first time he had fun on PWD. He came over again Friday and applied the wheels and tested the car on the board then the track. Saturday was the big race. There were over 20 cub cars. As I got to the race I was totally undercover. No one had a clue I helped this kid, it was between he and I. I was a fly on the wall. I was standing near the finish and hearing the comments from the very competitive dads. The first run this kid won his heat of 4 cars by what looked like 4-5 car lengths. These dads were making quick excuses about the start gate and such. Second time the car ran same result. 3rd time he was against a car that belonged to a kid and dad who thought they had this in the bag, he got crushed! This guy was so pissed! I was cracking up so very hard inside it was hard to keep a straight face. The guy actually said "that kids family always comes in last, they must have docterd the wheels!" The pissed dad calls to his boy to come over and add more graphite. The cars had been checked in but no leader seemed to notice. This guy drenched the car in a bath of graphite. The kid took his car back. Now, every kid was bringing their cars back to this table that was becoming covered in a layer of graphite and empty tubes. And they say oil can't be used because it's messy! Anyway kids had graphite all over their face, nose, lips, and hands from rubbing their faces after the graphite dowsing. Well, it did not work, we were getting faster. Now these pissed off fathers asked this kid who I helped to see his car between one of the races. They took it from him and started the exam. They passed it around and then took it back to the staging area. Each car sat on a raised block so as not to be set down on the wheels, well these pissed off competitive dudes, one of them slammed the car hard down on the bare table onto the tuned wheels hard enough for me to hear it from quite a distance away as I was watching the whole thing. This slowed the car .04 My little friend started winning by much closer races but still winning. Finals came and went and he took the only trophy home that night, first! These dads will be the same to write the rules next year after watching a few you tube vids. Sad to see that type of attitude but very happy the car preformed under that kind of stress, glad I did not have to use slots!
