Hi. New guy here. Just want to thank you for all the great information on this site. Here is my story…

Moved up to coastal northern California in February and saw that the local art center was having a pinewood derby race. I had built decent cars with my sons for YMCA Indian Guides in the mid 90s when speed information was harder to find.

So I decided to enter the race.

After surfing this site and a few others I felt I had a basic understanding of some key fundamentals for making pine move quickly. I bought some tuned legal wheels and did all the balancing, aligning, and stuff until I felt my two cars (+18 and unlimited) were race-ready.

The track was available to test on the day before the race so I did a few runs (only person there — odd) and had a nice rail-slide and a best time of 2.510 for a 35 foot track - not knowing if this was fast enough for the local guys who have been racing this track for years.

Race day. Pass inspection and take a seat for the show. My class is staged and the best times are around 2.68ish. I am thinking — my test times must have been a fluke. So I wait for my car to come up.

It scorched the pack causing an audible cheer from the audience as it laid down a track record and was 3 car lengths ahead and pulling away at the finish.

Fast forward: I won all heats and set track record for 5 oz cars. And won all heats and fastest overall with 2.501 for unlimited 13 oz car with new track record and breaking the 200mph with a 203. It was kinda embarrassing but still cool. Also picked up a most artistic award too.

I still have alot to learn. Starting next car for January race now. Thanks again for all the information. I will try to contribute to this forum as best as I can and look forward to learning more from you folks.

Regards

Bill

Awesome story Bill! You've found the right forums with a great bunch of guys and the best league in the country (NPWDRL). Warmest welcome to you and please make youself at home.

thanks for the warm welcome folks. i used to build model cars all the time when a kid and built and raced slot cars as well. love working with my hands... great time before computers. I'm 61 and retired living in the redwoods. great to be tinkering with small cars again. wish i had a wood workshop but will make do with what i have.

Hi Oxford,

Welcome! Great story!

Do you have photos of your cars?

If so then you can upload them to Photobucket

From there you will be able to post them onto this forum. The "Pinewood Derby Car Photos " section is the usual place, but not mandatory.

I am eager to see the car that won most artistic.

Congrats!

Get in the shop and start sanding and shaving. The next series starts in just under 2 months, but, beware. You might have to race this car:

Great story. Similar to mine 3 years ago. Helped an AZ grandson who went from Pack, District and Council, winning huge trophies. Some one steered me to DD4H's site. Read about it and viewed photos. There was a race in one week, so I went to SLC, UT and brought my grandson's car. We ended up in next to last place, but I was hooked. John (DD4H) spent a day with me the next day telling me why my car was so slow. So I entered possibly the next 10 or 20 events. BELIEVE ME, THESE GUYS ARE SUPER FAST! In the next three years, I have only taken ONE first place in the BSA class (we call it SS).

So enter the August event. After that, phone and ask John (or anyone else who's car you see that impressed you) for advice. You will be pleased on how helpful these guys are. No one has ever given me a false "red herring" advice.

At the top of this page, you will see "Private Messages". We call it PM. Every one of us are there. PM anyone. But first enter your car so you can see how it stacks up. In looking at your car's pictures, I would advise you to enter BASX, the class that's very close to most BSA rules. You could also enter one of your cars in SS amateur or novice class. Most of the cars in this class have fenders and lighter wheels than BSA or BASX cars.

Welcome aboard.
