New Street Stock rule amendments

The great thing about the NPWDRL setup is that we can fix the shortcomings. There have been two major rule issues that have perplexed me this year. One is the wheel issue. It is kind of like the no grooved axle thing. Very hard to judge with the wheels on the car. A good machinist can true the inside of the wheel and you would only be able to make a judgement call. Instead of goin the scout route and trying to clamp and slow you guys down I feel like there is a better solution. I have run this by many builders and all agree it is the best way to go. This will also level the playing field even more because the illegal wheels will no longer give an advantage.

Rule amendment #1
Street stock wheels must be BSA wheels
They must retain all lettering inside and out
The tread surface must remain 7.5mm or greater
The wheel can weigh no less than 2 grams. Anyone with wheels in question will be subject to having a wheel removed and weighed at the end of the race.

This will eliminate hours of tech in and will create a level playing field for all. It will also allow you as a builder more freedom to find more speed.

The 2nd change I will let the group as a whole decide. This is not cub scouts but yet we have a wheel base restriction. It makes no sense at all. I will post a poll for this one to eliminate the wheel base restrictions. Once again this will give us room to experiment more and get more variety to separate the racers.

Changes will go into effect for the spring fever race.

I agree on the wheel rule 100%. Will save massive amounts of time. So my understanding is that the flutting on the side no longer needs to be there, as long as the wheel weighs 2 grams or more?

Also on the wheel base. That is a rule I never understood. Most packs don't have any wheel base restrictions. We get a lot of newer guys wanting to try out there scout cars against the best, and get moved to the SP class because of wheel base. Talk about getting scared out of league racing. It still is a 4 wheel no lighter than 2 gram wheels, sounds like a winner for every one. Even though I did just build a new SS.

I like the idea of being able to just move the rear back and keep the front where it is with fenders.

I have always built faster Street Stock style cars with the standard wheelbase. Everytime I move it with heavy wheels it won't beat my fastest SS. Remember longer wheelbases might mean no front fenders.... This will give us endless new combinations.

As always John you come up with a great solution, thats fair and gives racers many options. Your THE MAN AGAIN my friend !!!! ...SPIRIT......

Love the new rule changes! 4 wheels- long wheel is a great idea! How about some decorative fluting must remain? Does this mean Cheetah's are in for Street Stock? If so, can the rule change be in affect for the first team race, for those that may have purchased them for SS? John, can you send my Cheetah's back?? Please /images/boards/smilies/smile.gif

The rule changes sound great. However, I would suggest no rule changes during the season. If there needs to be a rule change at least wait until after the summer break. This can all get very overwhelming real fast. Just my two cents. /images/boards/smilies/smile.gif

I agree with Kinser & ET make a lot of sense to wait till after break. And gives everyone that wants to change wheelbase or wheels time to plan their builds.

+1 to that too! Already have my SS w/std WB built. No time to build another right now.

I'd agree with the wheel rule change, but I'd like to see the wheelbase stay the same. I personally think it keeps the SS class closer to scout racing and allows more of the build techniques and tuning to transfer to "regulation" scout cars. I think part of the challenge of the SS class is due to the shorter wheelbase...

i have about 5 packs with-in about 25 miles of cadiz, 1 is a 4 touching slots only rules, 1 is 3 touching slots, 2 are 3 touching but any wheelbase, and 1 is 4 touching any wheelbase.
thats why scout turn-out has always been low for my races.
the scouts do NOT have ANY national leadership for the pinewood derby.
if the national BSA would put their foot down and say these are the rules, i would be against this rule change. but as they dont seem to care, how do we define just what a real scout car is?
