Notched body with full fenders???

Hey folks,
I am getting close to doing my fenders on the Awana cars for the kids and myself. But now I have a mental road block. (Common these days)
I am going full bodied fenders X3 style. I also planned on doing the 1/16” notch at the DFW. I am trying to figure out how I would pull off the trailing portion if there is a notch then going to regular width.
My thoughts are not going notch if full fenders.

Has anyone done full X3 fenders and ALSO the notch that could maybe chime in?

If anyone could provide some insight it would be greatly appreciated.

You'll be okay. All my fender cars have a 1/16" offset.
When you start shaping your fenders you'll find that you will remove less mass on the inside of that trailing fender and more mass on the outside

This is the only picture I can come up with here at my office. Its a box stock car in the middle of the build.

In order to get the trailing fender to line up with the DFW, I will notch the body all the way to back of the trailing fender.
Put an axle and wheel in the axle hole for the DFW. Push the trailing fender to the wheel and mark the back of the trailing fender. That is how far I would notch the body. Now the fender can sit squarely behind the DFW.

Crane I see what your saying but what if I am planning on doing the full inner wheel to wheel fender like the X3? Seems like I'll have to shape the inner edge to form for to the offset of the side of the block.

My approach does not work if you use a full length piece between the wheels. It works if you are taking the approach like Reecedad. Notice the gap by his trailing DFW fender? It has a gap that could be a weak point.

Hurricrane, by a "weak point", do you mean a weak spot in the frame or a less aerodynamic fender set? Both?
 
No problem...

Chances of a break occurring are minimal, unless you are racing on a hotwheel type track with no stop section, or a very rough stop section.

More often than not, you will get flex from the car in the point that has that small of a step. A flex in the body will rob the speed from your car.
 
As a side note, I have found that fendered cars in particular do not need all of the extra bracing (well, at least I do not do it). After the fenders are installed, and if you paint them with CA, they strengthen the body immensely.

i had just bought a small bottle of thin CA too but totally forgot i was going to coat the fenders. Looks like i'll have to get another bottle. lol
