Oil Method Question

My son and I are using oil for the second time, but have a couple questions for the more experienced oil users.

He races in three weeks. We don't want to put the oil on too soon, so how soon is too soon to add the oil? Is the night before the best bet?

Today we sprayed the axles with Mo-Deck and waxed the wheel bores. Is there any harm in doing multiple coats of silicone and wax? I imagine a couple coats is fine and that this part of the process can be done in advance. Just wanted to know if I was off base.

I used Pro-Bore Wax after a plastic polish.

We applied the wax today and planned to polish it out tomorrow. Will the wax lose effectiveness just sitting?

I don't have any idea what Pro-bore wax is. Who sells it? It won't deminish just sitting.

Derby Worx

Bore waxing as the final step of wheel preparation has shown to be a significant speed benefit in Pinewood Derby Car Racing. It leaves a very slick final finish that reduces (Stiction) or starting friction for smooth, quick starts and faster overall runs further enhancing the performance of Krytox®GPL 100 racing oil for the ULTIMATE in Pinewood Derby PERFORMANCE!

Derby Worx has simplified this speed tip into a simple kit with our own blended Pinewood Derby Speed Wax along with a thin pipe cleaner for easy application and a thick / fluffy pipe cleaner for finishing buffing to a slick / friction free gloss before lubing.

***Prepare your wheels to your rule set, polish and clean your hub bores first. Bore waxing should be done as the final step before lubrication and assembly.
Instructions
Apply a small bore Wax to the thin pipe cleaner and work it into the fibers not to leave any thick spots or clumps.

Place in the wheel bore and gently apply the wax. The object is to get a coat of wax on the hub bore and not wipe it out when removing the pipe cleaner.
Allow 30 mins for the wax to cure to a haze.
Use the thick pipe cleaner to buff out the hub bore to a slick shinny gloss.
Remove any extra on the wheel with a Q-tip or soft rag before assembly
That's the stuff. Thanks, B.

I let it cure for a lot longer than 30 minutes.

I know a lot of people use wax of some sort. I'm curious if people do more than one application. Same with silicone on the nails.

More applications on the wheel bore cannot hurt anything. Only one application on the axles. Make sure the axles aren't out in the open collecting dust after spraying. If they are, redo them. Otherwise you'd probably be faster with graphite.

using MO deck you will be just as fast with graphite anyway

Mo Deck is slow? I've heard people say it was a good a Jig for them. Plus, it's the only spray we've been able to find.

My experience is limited. We used Mo Deck last year on a car that was originally run as a graphite car. We cleaned off everything with alcohol and did the oil process for the first time. It was faster than when the car was graphite.

If you can't get Jig then Max Pro silicone spray is the closest thing. Lots faster than MO Deck.

Is this the stuff? http://www.walmart.com/ip/Max-Pro-Heavy-Duty-Silicone-Lubricant/24358860

CT Dad did the lube you ordered work any better?
I ordered the Max Pro, which was recommended, but it never came in and Walmart online eventually cancelled the order and refunded my money.

While it's contrary to what a lot of people state, I--so far--have had the best luck with Mo Deck. I got my hands on a can of Jig and at first the can wouldn't spray correctly. We got what we could on the axles and the car ran slower than our control car (my son's car from last year). We tried again and the can sprayed much better, but the car was still slightly slower than his Mo Deck applied car from last year. So, we went with Mo Deck and he took second overall in our pack. I'm guessing the Jig was a bad can and not actually applying any silicone. My son has districts this Saturday, so hopefully he has good results.

Hah! I had the same problem, trying to order some Max-Pro! I did the site-to-store and the notification that my pickup was ready never came. By the time I started investigating, the order got cancelled and they sent me a refund.

I've tried again, this time having the can sent directly to me. I got a notification that my order shipped this morning, so fingers crossed... /images/boards/smilies/smile.gif

Good luck, we just had our districts and took a 1st and 2nd with my 2 scouts. I want to learn the oil process for the North Star Council race in June to put the smack down on the fast guys.

Thanks, and congrats to you guys. My son's goal is to finish in the top three of his rank at districts.
