I'm getting ready to start polishing the 91 Axles I received from DD4H. What is the right grade sand paper to start off with? Do you start with the 400 and work up or something mid way. Reason I'm asking is the axles are not rare like a BSA axles would be?

You will get different answers on this but I think most people start at 2000 or 2500 grit. I have heard of a few using 3000 to start. I start at 2500 myself. The important thing is leaving as much metal on the axle as posible while having the smoothest polished surface possible.

i start with 3000 and then go to 8000 then 12000. i think starting with 400 would be detrimental to the axle.

I started at 2500 as Old Geeezer suggested, came out looking great. Time to go review the DD4H DVD again and move onto the hubs.

I go: 1500 (5seconds)
2000, 2500, 3000 for 7-10 seconds
6000, 8000 for 10 seconds
12,000 and 60,000 for 15 seconds each.

I have heard several say that 60,000 is either not good or not necessary, but I don't agree.

Finish with DD4H axle polish
and then with Brasso (Lowes)

I have a last final treatment that is my secret. I just started using it this month and I am getting a speed gain. But Jury is still out, however, under a powerful microscope, the mirror finish is better. This secret is only available with a meaningful trade-off (what say-you Kinser, QuickTime, etc.)

Sure I ain't got no secrets what you want to know?

The only thing I will say is there is much danger in using metal polishes. Most of them are very hard to clean completely off. The polish I sell is used because it cleans easily and seems to work hand in hand with my oil process. I have tried others and had terrible speed loss.

What he said, I have had the same problem.

I would have never thought it! I guess its one of those everything effects everything, things.
dazed
hmmm

I can tell you about a 100 things that don't work but I have no door squeeks anymore on the plus side........at least for the next 1000 years.
