proxxon drill

What is the difference between the Proxxon Mill and the Proxxon Drill Press with the X/Y table? With the right bit, it seems that I could mill with the drill press. Does the mill have the ability to be "programmed" or run via CAD software?

this is my understanding on the differences

1. the mill is variable speed from 5k to 20k where the drill is fixed speed at 1,800, 4,700 and 8,500 rpm depending on where you put belt

2. the mill the entire motor assembly moves on the vertical with the drill only the spindle part moves

3. the drill has a handle to pull for movement down, as the mill you have to turn a crank

4. the mill is slightly more power full

The Proxxon drill press is only designed for use on one axis only, the bearings in the drill will not withstand any axial abuse as they are designed for radial use. I may have this backwards, but in either case the bearings will fail and then ruin the accuracy of the drill press, if used as a mill. The bearings in the mill are design to withstand both axial and radial loading without distress and will maintain accuracy a lot longer.

With modifications the mill can be adapted for CNC style milling.

Ok Ill Be Ordering Tonight, But Now Im Unure If I Want The Drill Or The Proxxon Mill Will The Mill Do EverythIs It Worth The Extra?ing The Drill Does (Drill Axle Holes) And More is
SoGone has one of those mills. I looked at it, and if I had it to do over again, I would get the mill. It does both drilling and milling of weight pockets, body holes, etc. I will also do the wheel holes.
can you explain what you mean here "i will also do the wheel holes"

Typo. Should have been: It will also -------------------.

Oh man! I am totally confused now.

Joe,

Jimmy owns a machine shop. I wish he still raced.

Me too. He is before my time.

I bought a great tool off him that he designed for measuring runout on wheels.

It is a brilliant!

OK. I found the photo I was looking for but Jimmy Owens uses this tapper to REAM the holes, not drill them. My mistake.

After re-reading his thread I am re-realizing that this guy was just flat out amazing!
