Proxxon wood lathe...

I recently set up "shop" in the garage, purchasing a Skil band saw, drill press and belt sander. I also picked up the Proxxon drill press and micro compound table. When I bought the Proxxon drill, the gentleman was also selling a Proxxon scroll saw, wood lathe and table sander. I ended up cutting a deal on the whole shot. In fact, he was also the source for the Skil band saw... I bought the drill press and belt sander new.

Anyway... I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how the lather might be used to true up wheels. I don't think I'll be using the cutting tools since there's no micro adjustment on controls... it would be free hand. I'm hoping one of you might have had some experience... or an idea that will advance my wheel prep.

I have purchased the "Block"... so I'll be drilling my own axles and of course with the band saw cutting my own bodies. With my tool line-up, does anyone have any suggestions for making a nice clean job of the weight pockets. Could I use the drill with a router bit. I also have a variable speed Dremel and drill stand. I think the Dremel would be high-speed enough.

That's where I'm at. Last year we lost the Council overall in a tie breaker. We're determined this year that there will be no ties to break! /images/boards/smilies/smile.gif

Hey John,
Sounds like you have a nice derby build shop started there. I am going to Harbor Freight tomorrow to check out a belt sander myself. So what is the advantage of the Proxxon drill press compared to a normal drill press? I was considering a scroll saw myself but I wasn't sure if it would handle a standard sized block; it looks like it will but I don't know for sure.

John,
I use a hand held router then make a jig out of MDF board to rought out the pockets in front and behind the rear axle. I will get a picture of it Saturday. Makes a real clean pocket. And it is very quick.

Here is the jig I use to route weight pockets.

If you had rather have a router with a table Craftsman makes a small table with the router that works really good but it does somewhat limit what you can use it for.

The Proxxon drill press is a precision tool generally used in the Electronics "circuit boards" jewelry making industry and lab settings. Anything that requires a higher degree of accuracy. A lot of PWD builder's agree this is a must tool in order to compete a the top levels. Although I will say there are builder who compete just fine with the "Conventional" press but seem to be in the minority. But this could be due to a limited budgets or justification of use "IMO" With that being said ,, the proxxon press has been covered on this forum with pix's. All one would have to do is use the search and pull all the info.. Have a good one.
