My 9 year old son just had his first pinewood derby race. Thanks to the advice of several people on this forum, out of 133 cub scouts, he placed first.

While we were getting signed up before the race, I realized that they were about to have a smaller race for the children in attendance too young to join cub scouts. I have a three year old that really wanted to participate. I had a shoe box of supplies that I'd brought so I could make any needed repairs to my older son's car. In about 15 minutes, I used a flimsy kid's hacksaw to cut a corner off the front of a block. I used a drill with a 1" diameter bit to hollow out as much of the car as I could. I extended the wheel base, filled a hole in the back up with change, and added graphite to the axles. I used some packaging tape to cover up the holes. I drew my boys favorite super heroes on the car with sharpies and let him color it. It came in 3rd.

I’m curious. Has anybody ever tried to make a basic block run as fast as possible? The reaction from everybody when his car won over and over was hilarious.
