Hi guys,
It's been awhile since I've been on here & now that derby season is here for the scouts (early for us Dec. 4th) time to get back to business. So, I volunteered to help out with with the kits & was handed a box full of kits (bulk) & to my surprise, crap wheels & axles! 4 spoke w/ the raised tread in the middle of the wheel & what looks like really long rivits for axles... Ugh
So my question is, do I treat these wheels & axles the same as the BSA wheels? Is canting necessary? Polishing of coarse but any more tips would be great!
I'm going to use the same wheels & axles as everyone else to be fair, my son is a first timer with the scouts but we did win the unlimited class as guests the last two years.
Thanks! Bob

Ok, here ya go!
It only took all day to figure out posting this pic so,
this is what i have to work with.
wheel dia. is 1.19
wheel bores are slightly smaller at .091, the studio 35s fit pretty snug.
the axles are surprisingly round .093 & no burrs like the stock BSA
the pack we joined is very novice like in the pinewood derby & really has know idea other than assemble & race.
i'm probably the only one with a clue so i need to set a good example & lead by example.
We all have to use the same kit so, time to build!
...But these wheels???
Lets hear what you got boys!

If the wheel bores really are .091 and the axles are .093 you're going to have a problem getting it to roll........

What do your rules allow you to do to the wheels and axles?

Yep, never mind the wheel bore measurement, but they are noticeably smaller. not much slop. I'll probably have to sand down the studio 35s to make them work. I'll have to check on the rules but if I remember right from last year, very basic. I'll probably take Bulldogs advice & just do a good prep on the axles & wheels. I think I'll use a practice block & drill (cant) just to see how that center tread rides on the track surface.

Does that center rib spin true? If so, you'll be fine with canting if the rules allow it. Raise the fourth wheel if you can. The outer hub looks dished in the pic? Coning would help there if that's the case. Keeps the axle head from acting like a bottle stopper. Just depends on what they'll let the racers do to the cars.

Many years ago we used to buy those kits, throw away the wheels and machine the axles. Pro axles were more expensive then than they are now. It was a relatively cheap way to get axles.

Were the axles relatively straight and round? Looking for a cheap way to provide decent axles for the boys in my son's cub scout pack this coming derby season.
