Removing crimp marks on BSA Scout Axles - What a pain!!!!

O.k., ignorance is bliss. Last year it was easy, chuck up the axle in a drill press, tun on drill press and file done the crimp marks and polish. This year I am trying not to remove too much material. First question. Is it more impaortant to have a perfect polished axle or have more material the axle? My cars run better with a polished axle.

What is the best technique to minimize scratches? My files leave deep scrathes. So far what works for me is to use 800 grit sand paper with a 1/4 inch balsa wood sanding block. I put the axles in a vise and sand away. Takes a lot of time but results in less material being used.

Or I should just stop reading to many post and keep it simple.

Thanks,

Joe

Use fine grit sandpaper on a hard wood block( not balsa to soft)and press against the axle.;) This will take out the crimp marks, but leave the diameter alone on the rest of the axle for the most part. Do this on a squared up drill press for the best results.
