My Tiger won his pack Lion and Tiger pinewood derby race divsion and had the fastest car of all the older scouts as well. We were told at our pack meeting that he would be the alternate racer at districts. The pack sends 3 racers and an alternate. The alternate isn’t eligible for prizes or awards.
#tonyaharding?

Why is your Tiger the alternate if he had the fastest car?
Because “he will have his time to show his stuff”. It’s how they do it every year.
The councils rules say its up to the pack how they decide which scouts move on to districts.
If I were one of the 3 boys going from our pack I would let the tiger go instead.

Our Council doesn't even have a Council Race....they feel our territory is too big and people that live too far away from event won't show. Heck there is a couple of Districts in our Council that don't even have District race.

HAHA you would be shocked to know how far people will drive and fly to a PWD!!!

Thats not cool! I would build a car that was SO fast it would blow those other kids doors off...Trophy or no trophy, you would have braggin rights hahaha!!

Wow, that’s not cool! They seriously need to change that rule, extremely unfair. The older boys will show their stuff alright, and their stuff will be slower than your son! Winner is the winner, no matter the age, and you want the fastest, most deserving scouts to represent your pack. No gray area. The older boys have had there chance to go! Let the true winners represent, they deserve it. If my kids were going for some silly rule, you can bet we would decline and insist the winners go. Why even have the race? Just pick the scouts they went to go and skip the charade. And I’m sure he will be back, but what if a scout just happened to have a fast car one year and didn’t get to go, and never had a fast car again? Guess they missed their time to show their stuff.

That is so not cool. Not really in the scouting spirit. If you have an option, I'd be inclined to look for another pack.[/QUOTE
I second that, find another pack. Not all packs are equal and all run a little different. If that is not an option take on a leadership role and make changes. Sorry that sucks.

I'd be pretty hot if this were my son. I read the other day that the new parenting style that is becoming a problem isn't helicopter parents, it's lawnmower parents. They go in front of their children and knock down any obstacles. I see this more and more.

Kids need to learn early in life that most things (hopefully) operate as a meritocracy.

I third the find a new pack.

That’s exactly what our oldest did and it was just about the same and he ended up quitting. Fortunately, my youngest had not been exposed to that type of behavior and we found Trail life USA. It has been fantastic! Much better group and it is more like the old school cub scouts where parents actually worked together and helped a lot more. But that’s just my experience

I totally disagree with this pack's decision, but I think leaving a pack over it seems a bit extreme. I don't think the "point" of the policy is to give some advantage to particular kids or to claim nobody loses. Its just that if the parent of a Lion/Tiger cub reads this forum, that kid is going to take up a district slot for the next six years, which means fewer kids are going to get some opportunity to advance. Sending the top few most senior scouts means more kids get to go once or twice, and those scouts still did quite well at the Pack race. Those same Lion/Tiger cubs are surely going to advance during their time in the Pack.

Again, I think the policy is on balance wrong, and I don't even slightly blame Pack76oldtown for being on the bitter bus right now. I just think it would be pretty wrongheaded to leave an otherwise solid pack over something like this.
