rough day today

This has been a tough day, as far as pinewood derby is concerned.

1. While finalizing a car, I was cutting back the monokote and sliced a delrin washer in half. For most of you in Pinewood derbyland, this is not exactly a big deal. Sadly for me, "just glue it back on" doesn't seem to be the answer. I can TRY to glue it on, but the likelihood of success is quite dim. Short of using camel snot and singing an Anasazi war chant, I know of no way of getting it back on. I've proven I can glue my fingers together, just not the washer.

2. I was goofing off and going to see what time my other car was making when I ran it down the track. I didn't have the stop section lined up correctly (didn't even check actually) and it smashed into it. I don't mean bumped it, I mean SMASHED!!!!!! (I know, I know, put the clips on the track and leave it alone). The car broke near where the rear axle and the tungsten are. Why it broke there, I don't know. I had babied that plank and had it just the way I wanted. Still might just put some Alabama fastener (duct tape) on it and race anyway! (Side note, I didn't properly trip the reset, so I didn't even get a time on that run).

3. I bent an axle so far, the wheel wouldn't go on. I then tried to bend it back. Did you know that you can actually snap one of these axles in half? I promise you can. Might just use some more Alabama fastener on that axle and put that axle in my broken car and see if it will finish. If you see a car that registers 9.9998, I'll give you one guess who's car it is. (It's Bulldogs!!!)

Anyway, tomorrow has got to be better!!!!

On a brighter note, if the car runs 9.9998, you save it for nationals and take home the Snail national championship.

And I thought my day was getting rough... I only broke my crossmember where the rear axles are drilled... was building the car, not even to the point of having it sanded down yet... Just trying to get the tungsten to fit... SNAP ! How can a little piece of sugar pine make that loud of a noise when it is breaking with the grain?

Haha, that's funny I've had the same thing happen to me, and yes it's loud, so loud my wife from across the room yelled with her evil eyes "what the hell did you just do? Do you know how much those bodies cost? Apparently she's a good listener as well when I'm blabbing about PWD.

BBY and Mojo Racing, Man! What a day you guys have had. I can't bring any stories like that today, but I do hope things get better for you both. You've both gained some experience today of what not to do again. Get back on the saddle again and move forward, it's getting close once more to send in. Best of luck to you guys!

I had a few bodies that I was working with, that just happened to be the best of the three, so I was working it first... and... well... that story was told once... LOL

Anyhow, brought the other two bodies down with weight just put in, wheels that ran mid pack, and the steer set to 4". It pulled about as fast as some of the others after tuning... this could be helpful /images/boards/smilies/smile.gif

Stop section problems seem to be the latest topic so here is my sad story. Yesterday I was testing my unlimited "Broken Heart" on my track which has the Best Track stop rubber surface on my stop section, which until yesterday was working OK. On one test run my car immediately, on entering the stop, section flew off the track but was undamaged when it landed on the floor. Thinking this a fluke happening I ran it again and the same thing happened but when it landed on the floor this time it bent both rear axels and damaged the wheels beyond repair! Something had obviously changed, so when I inspected the rubber I found that it had become loose and unglued at the start of the stop section. The sticky back of the rubber was not sticky anymore! I figured out that as the bottom of the car contacted the rubber it lifted up rebounded and catapulted the car into the air and off the stop section! Bad news! I was able to fix this by taping down the first two inches of he rubber so it did not lift off. It has been OK since then. Lesson - make sure your rubber stop material is tightly secured so this can't happen to you and damage a car!

I keep my stop section covered with towels when the track is not in use. The towels get placed alongside when cars are running. Came in handy more than once when a car derails in the stop. I'm going to add plexiglass shields next.
