This is how I ship my cars to the NPWDRL events. I've used this method for 3 years and have not had a damaged car yet. They are slow but not damaged...LOL.

The following is a series of pictures for my shipping box

Items Shown

1 - 1/4" Thick Shipping Box (12x14x11)
2 - 4" Upholstery Foam (12x14x4)
3 - 1" Upholstery Foam (12x14x1)

I insert my legend shipping boxes into the cut outs of the 4" foam. I like to have 2" of padding on my side walls. I pack my box in the following order:

1" Foam (12x14x11) Bottom
4" Foam (12x14x11) 1st Level
1" Foam (12x14x11) Middle
4" Foam (12x14x11) 2nd Level
1" Foam (12x14x11) Top

After my box is packed I place all my paper work in an envolope along with a Prepaid Shipping label from the USPS. Hope this helps give you some ideas on how to ship your cars. Its probably not the best but I've never had any damage. I also have a box made for shipping two cars.

On my Legend Boxes I write the following information:
Car Name and Class

On my cars I write the following information on the bottom:
Car Name and Class

It really helps the race crew if you do that, If you have ever worked a proxy race you will know why. There are a 100+ cars to be re-boxed and shipped.

good idea buddy! My boat seats for my center console is at upholstery shop now when i go pick them up will get some foam. Thanks for the information! Just getting started so everything is a help.

Glad I could be of some help. The Upholstery Foam comes in different grades. I went with the (least dense) they had for the 4".

Looks good Reso! I would have to have a huge box for all of mine and LittleMan's cars. I am curious how mine did being it was the first time i shipped them, i heard John's comment about people's shipping and wondered if it was mine.

You could get 8 cars in this same box using the 3" Legend boxes. You could have two levels of 4 cars. My spacing between cars and the side walls is overkill. Four car boxes could set flush to each other and not have a problem per level.

I can say that as John and I packed every car today that some were very well done and some lacked the attention to the necessary level. We all invest time and money in our cars. Please make it easy on you and us to ensure your cars are done properly. Also..... Make sure to include postage tag. Write the names of your cars and boxes so there is no doubt where they go. If there is any slop in your box the car gets damaged and it delays the start times as we spend our efforts to ensure everyones car goes down the track. Packaging 120 cars is time consuming and we want to ensure that your car is back to you safe and sound.

Reso does great!

Owens does great!

Geezer is the master of the organization and packaging. Maybe each can also show their shipping to help us all know the safest and most cost effective way to ensure these little jewels arive safe and sound...

DD4H offers the shipping boxes that have the foam to be cut out to fit each car perfectly. Get some if you haven't already.

Where is the cheapest place to get the foam? I have been thinking of doing this for sometime now. That bubble wrap is a pain for me and I am sure for John.

Renegade,

I would check your local yellow pages for Uholsterers or Furniture Repair Stores in your area. Most of the foam comes in 2' x 6' stock lengths. I also had my box made at a local packaging and shipping company. On the foam you want the least dense grade they have.

Get Geezer to post a pic of what he did. I could unpack and pack his cars in less than a minute.

I want to give a big thank you to those that were able to enclose the paid return labels. I am having problems here with some of the boxes that had stamps. Some have been redelivered to me with incorrect postage which means I have to pay for it all again. I would rather you just put the money in for shipping if you arent going to print out the return labels. TRUST ME, if I put stamps on your box you are taking a huge risk! No delivery confirmation! Take the few extra minutes to protect your hard work.

When Sandra shipped our cars the lady at the post office she asked for a prepaid return label but the lady told her the only way she could pay for return shipping was stamps, it seemed to me they could have printed a shipping label as they did to ship it the first time. If someone can tell me more specifically what we need to ask for next time we may have better luck. This is honestly the first time I had ever wanted anything I mailed back.

The easiest thing to do is setup an online USPS account. This lets you pay online and print your labels, one for shipping to the race the the other included inside for return shipping.

Yep, set it up online. It also is CHEAPER!
