This was my first race with NPWDRL. How do these badges work and what do you need to do to acheive each?

No-one broke 2.98 sec in BASX yet, but a few of them got close this month. That would probably deserve a special badge of its own./images/boards/smilies/biggrin.gif

The badges work as follows
SS Class - Sub 3 or Sub 2.98
Basx - Sub 3
In order to qualify for the Sub 2.98 badge you need to average below 2.80 (2.97x average or better)
In order to qualify for the Sub 3.0 Badge you need to average below 3.00 (2.9x average or better)

Yes you'll get one. It takes some time. Be patient. There are a lot of things to do and one John to do them.
