Started my 1st entrant into the Street Rod class, but looks like I under estimated the time necessary to complete one...AND...have it look good. There is a lot of work that needs to be dedicated to the appearance. It does not look like I will make it this race, but for sure, it will be there next month.

That being said, I was wondering what would be a good starting point in setting up the COM? I know it’s probably a trade secret, but I was just looking for a good starting point. So far, the car still seems to hold steady with an approximate 1/2” COM, but I can see how there is significantly more resistance due to the size of the body through some initial testing. I would be very easy to see how cars in the SR class are more susceptible to being disturbed by another running alongside. So, I’m guessing a typical SS setup would not be the best of ideas.

Any thoughts from those who race in this class?

First: Awesome! I'm very happy to hear you're working on one. I am determined to get two chassis built and get two cars sent in for this race (although one car is giving me fits with paint!) [Pics will come soon]

Second: What D4D said. And what you said. I expect that 1/2" to 3/4" would be the sweet spot.

Are there any notable forum posts about making a basic chassis? Would be nice to have sticky threads for all the classes that use different parts then street stock for any newbies to get them started.

The rules are the same for SS and SR, with the exception of the weight; you're allowed 6oz instead of the typical 5oz. As far as the base chassis goes, I was going to widen the chassis by adding balsa to point where I could tape the body to the chassis. I was particularly interested in the SR setup, and the changes that a racer would make as opposed to SS.

There's not too many racers in this class, not sure why, but I'm having double the entertainment in not only building a PWD car, but making a top-notch looking body to go with it. I may lose, but my entrant will look damn good doin' it...

Quicktime posted his method along w/ pics: Quicktime's Street Rod chassis attachment (I use QT's method)

Carolina Gravity also shared his method: Use Velcro to Attach Body

I just picked up a '70 mustang a few days ago with the intention of building an SR...not the most aero, but have a history with that car so it should motivate me. No clue on how Im gonna put it together either, but it will be fun to work on. Im not going to research too much on it, see if I can figure something out and have a clear mind for new ideas...probably wish I would have. It will be a while though, I still dont have cars prepped for next weekend and still have a new track to set up...darn family and work getting in the way all the time!!

I have a '70 Mustang (Pony Express)..........good choice!

BSB, very nice, I am jealous. The one we ran around in when I was in early high school was a red convertible. Would love to find another...love the front end look on those. A guy at my work has a red '67 GT almost all original.

My SRs are different - they are all at about 1" COM.

Maybe I miss-led you? Mine is 1/25 Scale, a door slammer, not the full size version.

You know, I'm sitting here and armchair quarterbacking, and I'm rethinking, and think that the Quadad to D4D range would be the hot spot. With the amount of air that these cars are pushing into the cars beside them, it makes sense that you'd want a bit more weight sitting on the DFW.

Then again, I've been armchair quarterbacking this class for years now...
