Two years ago I bought every Derby Works tool there is, we won pack the end. Last year I discovered this site and thought it may be just a site for pushing DD4H products. Nope, I quickly learned how much I did not know! I wasted a lot of money on bad tools. The more I read here the more I wanted to compete. It was hard to convince my wife to let me spend money on D.W tools, and because we won pack she thought they were just fine. "Honey, I need a silver bullet, a how to DVD, a polishing kit, some lathed wheels, a microscope, a tuning board, a dremil, thank goodness I already have a wood shop. And don't forget I need a 42 ft best track and a timer." Uh.......... So It was hard to convince her, and I had no way to plead my case. So at the same time I was working on a truck project. I was fixing up an old f 150 pick up. Every time I turned around we were leaking money. Then I got to looking at street racing. There was this show on t.v about these guys from Oklahoma, they built street racers. Dang, those guys spent a tone of money. So, I asked my wife to watch the show with me. Every time I see a car show advertised I ask my wife if I could buy a classic and restore it for a car show. Lets just say she is begging me to stick with pine wood. The pine wood rabbit hole goes deep. I'm getting ready to buy some razor wheels and berings, still a whole lot cheaper than the alternative! I love you honey. She brought me home a couple model car kits so I could start my first street rod build.

You know, on the surface adult PWD racing looks like a hobby for men who never grew up. But if you take a deeper look ...

yeah ... that pretty much all it is.

But its a relatively cheap hobby really. And many of tools you buy (the real tools, not the DW stuff) can be used for other purposes.

Spousal support does make it easier...

Welcome to the NPWDRL and looking forward to seeing you on the track soon. First race is 17 days away. Good luck to you.

Ahh, yes, words of wisdom!

P.s. The "farm truck" might be Gravity X's.

My wife rolls her eyes at my obsession with PWD and then buys me a Proxxon for Christmas.
Talk about mixed messages. She's such and enabler!

Well, I've bought my wife gift certificates to the fabric store, even after her quilting supplies were literally overflowing our spare bedroom, so...

Never got a Proxxon, but she did get me a gift card to Harbor Freight for my birthday... /images/boards/smilies/wink.gif

You got a Proxxon from your wife for Xmas?

For myself in Omaha I normally have my car in the mail the Sunday before the race. Which really mean it doesn't start heading to John's till monday morning.

"Farm Truck".... naw, I spend money on tools for work (and play). It all works out good. My toolbox at work would make most envious, as would the one at home. Tools are my thing, wife has her own thing, that I support, financially.

For what it's worth. I work with a guy that spends his spare time going to those street races. He doesn't compete with them but he does know those guys, so he says. He, himself, spends bunches of money in those drag street cars. It's not for me.

We have a rule for X-mas, and Birthdays. "You get what you want, NOT what you need!"(Isn't that a Stones song?)
So, last November, I got Tungsten, and Pine for my Birthday, and tools, and "toys" for X-mas! I needed warm Winter clothes. I might be COLD, but I've got some pretty cool cars in the works! /images/boards/smilies/wink.gif

I hope you didn't get that scroll saw for your birthday!
wah

Nope. The scroll saw was a craigslist find, I had to buy!(September) The guy lived a few miles from me, and while- "In the market" for a scroll saw, I had to buy it. He was selling a 16" Craftsman scroll saw, and multiple new blades for $40.oo. I did some research, and the blades were worth more than $40.oo.
I told him why I needed it, for my Grandson's Pinewood Derby, and he threw in a few items I might need. Like a folding table, 50' extension cord, GFCI plugport, and a shop-vac.
Yeah, once again, in HINDSIGHT, I made the buy that landed me in the Doc-in-the-Box! (Stupid, but for $40.oo, I HAD TO!)
