OK, I will never buy this Testors Paint paint again. That sh!t stinks!!! Do the mini bottles stink too? That was as bad as eating mutton chops with no Mint Jelly! LOL

We've had mixed luck with Testors. I used as a kid (different 30 years ago I'm sure) on models and rockets and was fine. Two years ago, on kids rockets we had problems. Last year on rockets, we had good luck. there is an old thread here about painting that we employed and learned. Very light coats and double the dry time between coats. My kid has used the small bottles in his airbrush and had good luck on his models and used on his car this year and did a great job with stencils and flames.

Ice, were you using Testors lacquer or Testors enamel? I've had no problems using the lacquer but you couldn't give me the enamel. It takes weeks to dry when it's cool weather IMHO.

I use auto primer and let it dry for about 45 minutes. Then dry sand with 400 grit. I use Testors lacquer or Duplicolor and always use Testors Ultra Gloss Clearcoat, it looks wet when dry. Just my 2 cents.

LOL, I meant it smells bad!!
rofl
Really bad!

Man that brings back some of the old days... I paper sack and a cheap can of paint.. Oh wait was that a Malt 42 and a good .. hmmm... To much paint...

Crap! I remembered this post backwards and got enamel instead of laquer, sprayed my car with 2 coats, and proceeded to stick a nice big thumb print on it when I thought it was dry the next morning. Didn't have any thinner but iso alcohol worked good enough to strip it.

Been there.

Now when I use a can, I only use Krylon

This way I don't even have to read the label.

Personally, I'm a HUGE fan of Dupli-color. That lacquer dries super quick! And looks great.

I've had mixed results with most other paints — although metallic paints are usually fast drying lacquers. Except for Testors! I'm not sure what their formulation is, but that paint has given me so much trouble on my new SR. Great color, but, so much trouble.

I'm a cabinet builder so I always have lacquer in the shop. I tint the lacquer using universal tints. I putt the lacquer in a small aerosol spay bottle called a prevail when I do Derby cars. I can spray 5-6 coats in one night, with a fine sand between. To finish up with a show room finish I spray with a clear made for automotive called U-Pol. It comes in an orange can, http://www.amazon.com/CLEAR-HIGH-GLOSS-M-I-R-COMPLIANT/dp/B00269RUUQ it sprays like a hvlp and lays out sweet! It is ready for 2nd coat in 5 min. I wet sand with 1500-2000 in a few days and polish with http://www.meguiars.com/en/automotive/products/g17216-ultimate-compound/ ultimate compound, and then polish. Real nice finish.
