First off, I just want to say thank you to everyone on this forum for sharing your knowledge about pinewood derby. I created some tip videos this year to share with our church before our AWANA Grand Prix in an attempt to get more people interested. Much of what I have learned and implemented has come from all of you. I took first place in the adult class this year, we race on a 32' Best Track with The Champ timer. My cars best time was 2.5388, which is my best time. Thank you again for all of your suggestions and advice.

I was wondering if anyone could share were they purchase sugar pine from I am having a hard time finding a source online. I have been using basswood which is easy to find but it seems many of you recommend sugar pine.

I found some on eBay, it wasn’t cheap but enough to make 50-90 1/4 inch cars. In other words a lifetime supply. Last time I checked the seller had another lot.

Isn't young growth lighter? Just thinking less rings, faster growth, softer wood, better drills?? Maybe I'm wrong, just what I was thinking...

Young wood probably weighs less. I'm trying my hand at a few laser cut 1/4 inch cars that should weigh 7-9 grams so strength is my first prioirty.
