Long time lurker-My son is a Wolf and has come in a pretty close 2nd the last 2 years. After the Cubmaster invited me to the adult derby last year by informing me that I would never beat him, I ran one of DD4H's bodies with axles I prepped and BASX wheels and won. Since then I have read, re-read and sifted through this site for as much info as I possibly could determined to build my own winner-thanks to for all of the great information that they share.
This year I have my son's car and 2 siblings cars to build and we really tried to step up our game. We built 6 cars, which my son helped with all aspects of 1 full build. 1 of the drills was clearly off in the rear and 1 was off in the NDFW, the other 4 seem to be good, at the least 3 that we tested are. I was able to get access to our track as I am a leader and help set it up yesterday and test it out. I didn't get as much time as expected as I wanted to see if I could rearrange my weighting a bit and rotate some of my wheels and axles to get a true sense of which cars and setups were the fastest. I was able to run 4 of the cars of which I am happy with the track times of 3. The winning cars in the pack usually run high 3.0x and low 3.1's. These were all drilled with the clear drill jig (3 wheel rail runner), have standard axle slot positions (will fool around with moving rears back at some point), Black Ice on wheels, axles polished up to 3k, next level axle polish. The bodies all have same basic shape, but a few different methods (ladder with full birch overlay, ladder with weight pocket overlay, routed out with approx. 1/32 pine left.) I will post pictures after the races when I am comfortable pulling off tape etc. (just trying not to screw anything up yet)
I would love to hear which car/set-up you think I should run on my son's car and what you think of the times. These are run on a 40 ft older Freedom track, its definitely at least slightly different then the current model as it had to be modified a bit to add on the newer stop section. The track was in pretty rough shape but I was able to smooth out most of the gouges, but there is a section or 2 that are not running true and cause a bit of a wobble. My wobble was light but a few other racers test cars had it bad. I ordered a set of DD4H's 1.8g wheels and if they come in time I plan to prep and run those on either Car 3 or 4. What are your opinions of what car I should run and if I should mess with the weight placement at all. If the wheels do not come on time I plan to run car 4 as is, if they do come on time not sure if I run car 4 or 4. Please let me know if the link below works-it include a summary of the times ran, car set ups, etc. These are all prepped for graphite no oil allowed.
