Most of us in the PWD World had or is currently a mentor. Someone that affects the course of your or someone's life in a positive manner. For the football boys of Christian Collegiate Academy Gulfport Ms. it was "COACH JOE" Roberts. Coach Joe inherited a team in disarray and a perennial weakling. Thru his coaching style and character building of young men his small school 8 man tackle football team became a perennial power house including an undefeated regular season and missed giving his school it's first ever State Championship by a single play in the 2016 State Championship game.
His battle with cancer was a short one. Even in some of his darkest hours his humorous personality kept everyone laughing. However being a consament Clemson fan it all got real when coach Dabo Sweeney, head coach of Clemsom University, sent Coach Joe a personal video of encouragement just days before playing LSU for the NCAA title.
Coach Joe always took his incoming class aside and told them when you play your last game as a senior at CCA be sure you leave the program "better than you found it" as that was his team and coaching motto.
Coach old friend, it's not goodbye but just so long for now. We'll see you later. Enjoy watching your team from the best seat in the house knowing you left it better than you found it !!
