Just got home from helping my daughter's GS troop carve up some cars. For some, this was their first race, some second. The girls basically used their own designs. This is a use the slots and stuff in box race so we showed them the basic steps to polish an axle. Relieving the slots with an un used axle " before we sawed the cars" how to apply graphite and burnish. And how to insert axles without using a hammer. Unfortunately, there was the one mom and daughter who came in a little bit later and the holes didn't get relaxed before it was cut. It was probably the only car that needed relaxed prior to cutting. It started to crack when I tried to start the nail. I did not have my #bit with me to help. out come the wood glue and tape. I'll race just fine but it was kind of a heart break for me.
But its so much fun to watch those faces light up when you hand the there car after being shaped. To make life easy on them we used my hand belt sander to get'em a good start on sanding. With their parent permission, I'd hold the sander upside down then help them sand their car. One other thing we did was have stick on wheel weights from the tire shop available for those that need it. We know it's not the best but it's also better than nothing and not as tacky as 87 cents in change. LOL "I know we've all seen at least one.
At least these girls who came will pick up their cars on the correct side of the finish line.
It's the unfortunate reality that their will only be one winner.
