After some negotiating with the wife, she is starting to lean towards a track, on the premise it would be used to host scout races.

What do you think is the best number of lanes for a scout race, 2, 3, or 4?
What timer is the best timer?
What is the best race software?

It depends on how many racers you expect. I run ours with 3 lanes. It works just fine. 4 would be better.

Microwizard K3 timer is what I use as well as the leagues. Accurate, dependable and easy to read.

Grand Prix by Randy Lisano is the software I use. I think its the best out there.

I would typically expect to have around 15 to 20 racers, give or take. I like the idea of having another run for each car with a 4 lane track.

Looks like you buy Microwizard K3 seperate from Best Tracks website.

Would you get the Grand Prix Lite or the Grand Prix Pro Software?

Like Andy said before all depending on what you want to do. For just a small pack race and personal testing you could get away with the lite, you can alway upgrade. I agree with going to a 4 lane.
