Translate 2 car lengths

It depends on the class you are running and how fast the cars are to begin with. 2 car lengths against league cars will be different than 2 car lengths against a typical scout car. The thread below shows what a .010 loss looks like in slow motion. It looks to be about two inches or so. Based on that, 2 car lengths might be as much as 70 milliseconds

How much time would I need to step up to pick up 2 derby car lengths?

Greg

I'm looking for about .010 in my cars, but that's not 2 car lengths. But it's what I need to be more competitive and finish Top 5. What times are your cars running now and what particular class are you running?

Ok . A little more background...We are talking scout level. My Grandson's car was beaten by 2 car lengths at the council race. I sent the car to John's last race to get a real time on the car. Average time was 3.08. With that info, I was wanting to see how much we needed to improve to compete next year. There was one pack that had some bad news cars. My grandson's car had not really been challenged at his pack race or the district race. All the cars from this pack, which was the same pack that provided the race track and the personnel to put on the race, would out run our car pretty bad. His car was a back yard built, using the slots and full weight wheels, thin wedge shape, 5.0 weight, canted wheels, rail rider.

Precision drilled axle holes, some Derby Dad wheels and axles with tungsten weight will go a long way. I'd also use fenders.

I think if you just follow along here and read the many posts, in particular this post here. You'll find all the components to finding the two car lengths of speed you are looking for. John's products, DD4H are above and beyond any scout level product out there. Take a moment and visit the store. If you have any questions DO NOT hesitate to ask the pros. You will get an honest answer, the guys here are great. With proper prep and careful planning you'll get fast. Before you know it, you'll be the one everyone is talking about trying to beat and have the 2+ cars lengths on everyone else. Have fun!

Get the DVD from DD4H. I did a lot of what was there, but there are few tidbits which will definitely help. You would be surprised. All of the info is also here somewhere on this forum, but you can spend some time digging for it. It nice to see it show to you...

I've been on here 3 months now and reading all the time, I'm still finding helpful hints every week. I'm still looking for .01 to be more competitive. Every time I run a race I learn more, every time I build a car I learn more. Just keep reading and practicing and you'll be just fine too.

For a scout car on a 42' Best Track, one car length is equal to about .04 seconds. Two car lengths would be .08 seconds. You'd need to run at about 3.000 seconds on John's track to run as fast as the car that beat you by two car lengths. Hope that helps

Thanks guys...I never thought I would see a car at scout level run a 3 flat. The car that beat us, ran it off with another guy in his pack and it was so close you could not tell who won without the win lights. So I know there's somebody in that pack that's pretty good building these cars. I'm going after them. My son won the council race about 18 years ago. He was never challenged. I will try to do some catching up.

You guys that have tried fenders, are the Gee fenders the way to go? I know what John says but how much are you guys picking up with fenders.

you get about .01 or more with fenders done right..the track you raced on coulda been faster than johns track his is one of the slower 42 tracks... if a scout car breaks 3 sec on johns track with out of the box parts..its a realy fast scout car trust me
