Here is a newbie question: Does the DFW ride against the car body or the axes head?
I always thought that because of the steer (cant and toe) the DFW was doomed to run against the car body and thus I focused on smoothing and putting graphite on body and inner hub. (our scout rules do not allow anything else like delrin, Teflon, etc.).
But after all my reading here, I wonder if the pressure against the center rail from the steer also pushes the wheel back out to the nail head. If not, I have to imagine you guys would be talking a lot about how to improve friction on body surface.
But, I never see you guys talking about needing enough steer to push the wheel out but rather just keeping it on the rail. Maybe it ends up being the same thing.
Is this the reason that the default staging is with DFW just off the rail? I was thinking you would want the wheel to run free without touching the rail for as long as possible but that might mean it is against the body instead of the nail head.
Need some Pro advice.....
By the way....love this forum!!! I have 3 boys. My first is a Wolf this year and we won pack and 2nd at districts and 2nd at counsel. Unfortunately, we built this car before I found you guys. Looking forward to doing better next year or maybe trying to race with you guys. But I have a lot to learn. We have a sibling race, so I get to build 3 cars each year, so having great fun with my little guys.
